USS Helena

Post by afspret »

Just read that Paul Alan and his crew found the wreck of the Helena. With all the talk about the wrecks being plundered in the Java area, am I the only one who thinks things like this should be left alone?

I was thinking that as well. This wreck is not in extremely deep water [:(]

My understanding is that they ARE war graves and should be left untouched. However not all are law abiding as we all know.

There is little International Law on this subject hence the very wide disparity between nations when it comes to sunk warship sites.

There is an international framework to cover warship sites but very few countries have adopted it.  Basically domestic law applies in the majority of locations and many nations do not have laws which recognise maritime grave sites.  Even those that have some relevant legislation usually lack the means (or the will) to enforce their own domestic law.
