The "All Souls Day Battle" is probably the most famous battle in the Hürtgenforest, where the American troops had to accept high losses. In November 1944, the target of the US troops was: The capture of the road network around the places Schmidt, Vossenack, Hürtgen and Kleinhau up to Düren. With the capture of the space Schmidt the Americans would dominate the entire area west of the Rur. The Germans have staged heavy Sturmpanzer and Volksgrenadier units in the Schmidt area under the direction of Field Marshal Model and General Hasso von Manteuffel.

Die Allerseelenschlacht ist wohl die bekannteste Schlacht im Hürtgenwald, wo die Amerikanischen Truppen hohe verluste hinnehmen mußten. Im November 1944 war das Ziel der US-Truppen: Die Einnahme des Straßennetzes um die Orte Schmidt, Vossenack, Hürtgen und Kleinhau bis hin nach Düren. Mit der Einnahme des Raumes Schmidt würden die Amerikaner den gesamten Raum westlich der Rur beherrschen. Die Deutschen haben im Raum Schmidt schwere Sturmpanzer und Volksgrenadier Einheiten stadioniert unter der Leitung von Generalfeldmarschall Model und General Hasso von Manteuffel.
