Freeze after the first turn

A friend mine and I are trying to play mutiplayer/PBEM, but it won't let us progress after the first turn. He has a Steam version and I have a Slitherine version. I did notice that Steam doesn't have the hotfix for 1.13 (1.13.001), so I emailed it him. Also I did apply a small graphics patch which highlights the rivers. Could either one of these issues caused the problem?
