AI not doing anything in some scenarios

Post by fierman »

I played the scenario 'Oosterhout' as single player a few times. On different difficulty settings too.
But in all cases, the AI ran to the south-west corner with most units, and simply kept staying there. No maneuvring or posing a challenge at all.
There are also two other squad groups, which will move to the group of buildings center-east, and will stay there until being shot away. Again no maneuvring or posing a challenge at all. They just sit still and take potshots.

Is this the way the game is supposed to be? I honestly hoped for a computer opponent that would like you know - pose a challenge. This was not what I expected at all.

I can see that this scenario needs some changes after the AI tweaking and new features in the last couple of Updates. I'm right now in the process of checking all stock scenarios and those with changes will be available in next UPDATE. This is not AI at its best. It can be much better and more challenging.

In "7th Somerset at Oosterhout", like in other scenarios (e.g. Escape from Velikiye Luki, Buchholz Station) where one side must exit the map and no VP hexes are present, the AI leaves its positions and runs to the exit hexes. The new AI-control features introduced in the last updates should allow to correct this behavior.

@ Paullus: I would be extremely interested in a description of the update process for "7th Somerset at Oosterhout", since I also have a scenario of mine (Buchholz Station) that has exactly the same problem.

Thanks for the explanation of possible causes.

005 - First Contact suffers similar problems too.

I appreciate the effort and support people are spending on this specific game (unlike with abandoned disasters like CoH), but for now I will give up playing this game. It's also the very very last time I will spend money on Matrix Games or Slitherine products. This is not the first time I got burnt, and frankly speaking I am fed up spending a lot of money on unfinished or plain broken products. I know better ways of spending half a day wages on non-fun activities.

Too bad....was strongly considering picking this up, but this worries me a bit....maybe in the future will give it a shot.

The scenarios affected by the problem reported by fierman are those few in which no VP hexes are present on the map and one side is expected to exit units from the map to gain VPs and where no VP hexes are present. Since we are talking about very old scenarios, I think this defect is due to the then incomplete understanding of how the AI works.

Most scenarios - having VP hexes on their maps - are not affected at all.

I'm very surprised the AI is responding that way because my experience has been different. I honestly don't remember how those scenarios in question played out but I did play them, been awhile.
Most of the time the AI poses enough of a challenge that I do lose now and then the first time playing a scenario. I have to say the AI in ToTH can be challenging
depending on the scenario. You can watch videos of ToTH being played on Youtube and you'll find the AI is putting up a good fight. Of course, The AI is weakest on the offensive.[:)]

Well, it may have worked in the past but it doesn't work now. Other scenarios have AI related problems too, making the game partly broken at this point.

Matrix Games or Slitherine products

Command is a high quality product but not for everyone. Complaints abound in this forum with little praise at all for Tigers. Try to find a post where a player is ever excited about their experience with this title.

I found - and I wrote [;)] - many such posts, and I am not the only one.

As regards to unfavourable posts, there is a large number of posts reporting bugs (which were promptly dealt with by Peter) as well as others that I can only classify as meaningless whining, such as "horror, you have to select units with keyboard and mouse in 2018!". What so?
