Query on Eastern block light mortars in CSME

Post by Hoplite1963 »

I have been doing some further work for the Syrian set on my unit handbook / unit view art mod for CSME and now got down as far as infantry mortars. I have noticed that the Syrians (and all the other nations that used mostly Soviet equipment) have a 60mm infantry mortar. Cross checked this with a range of sources which show that the standard calibre for Soviet mortars in this class was 50mm with versions PM-38 to PM-41 being in use a various times. The latest JTCPS versions of East Front II, West Front & Rising Son all have PM-38 50mm mortars for the Russian and Soviet Axis factions and no 60mm ones.

Should the 60mm mortars used by Soviet block equipped nations in CSME have PM-38 to PM41 50mm mortars instead of 60mm ones, or are the 60mm mortars intended to represent the US M2 60mm mortar or its near copy the Chinese Type 60 60mm light mortar ?

With regards to the Vietnam game, given their use of captured French and US equipment alongside the eastern block and Chinese kit they were supplied with (the US M2 60mm was pretty much a straight copy of the French mle 35 60mm mortar) guess the VC and NVA might need to have both 50mm and 60mm weapons.

On my handbook / unit view art mod I now have over 230 images ready to go and hope to post a further update in the next few days.

Regards
Ian
