artillery questions

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

artillery questions

Post by ciril »

Hi all,

1. when do arty units scoot on their own after firing? I am seeing quick scoot capable units not scoot, and those not capable move sometimes. And I assume they can only move after firing the last mission in their orders.

2. can the staff plot a bombardment even if the option is off? Several of my units got hit and my opponent is sure he did not plot a bombardment there.

Pretty good game overall.

Ciril, Let me take a shot at your questions.

1). Units that fire artillery and HQs that are generating high radio traffic will look to scoot from their current location. For artillery units, that will usually be after firing 3 missions. Units with a Quick Scoot ability can do this faster than other units and if under fire from counter battery get a small defensive bonus for "leaving the target location faster". In some cases if a unit takes fire and losses, it may drop orders and scoot for better cover.

2). If the option is off, then no the FSCC should not be doing anything. That said, there are two settings for the FSCC. One is in the initial options and I believe that prevents changes to the FCSS during a game. There is also an FSCC option in the Commanders Notebook on the Fire Support (FS) tab that turns it on and off. Somewhat confusing and getting overhauled for Southern Storm with a ground up rebuild. Each player can toggle that setting as they fit. It's usually better to leave the option on in the main screen and then toggle on or off as a player choice.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.

It does help - thanks! Maybe add it to the documentation somewhere?

One question, do the 3 missions have to be from the same order? In other words, does the counter to 3 restart to 0 each time a player order is complete?

Once you issue a bombardment and set the up to three TRPs, the counter resets for scooting. If you are getting hit, then you may want to shoot and then on the next orders phase do a move to a new location if the unit is not scooting on its own.

Hmmm, so if I do
Order 1 fire on one TRP
Order 2 fire on one TRP
Order 3 fire on one TRP
Order n fire on one TRP
the unit will never scoot, because the counter gets reset after each order is plotted. But sometimes I see them scoot even after only one TRP in the order.

Also, does automatic resupply take precedence over scoot?

Ciril, I will have to go into code and check and see if the unit is tallying up missions. Maybe I'm wrong. Been awhile since I've been in there. As for scooting versus emergency resupply, I'm pretty sure the unit will scoot and get some small amount of ammo from the emergency resupply if it triggers on very low ammo percentage.

I just witnessed an airstrike go in without me ordering it. The initial FSCC option is off, and the FS tab check boxes are greyed out and off, too. So something's hmmm off here.
