Feltan - Under African Skies

Post by scottb613 »

Hi Folks,

Been ages - just wondering if Feltan has been at all active around here ? He had the best scenario I’ve ever played - as my title refers... He includes an incredible depth and backstory to his scenarios that I haven’t seen replicated - heck - the guy should try his hand at writing a Tom Clancy type novel... I have his Florida Cuban campaign as well - just wondering if he produced anything new - especially finishing his “Under African Skies” campaign that he outlined in part one...

Any scenarios that may be in the same league that can be recommended ?

Thanks...

Regards,
Scott

Northern Fury series is wonderful, and are still in development, alongside other theatres (Med Fury, Baltic Fury, etc). Many of the biggest scenarios rival Under African Skies in complexity, and they are all connected into the same story.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the feedback - I’ll take a look... I’ve been updating my description and picture library as well that I shared in an old post - should have a new upload soon with hundreds of new entries... Been hitting the platforms in “Ex Pitch Black” which should make he Aussies happy... I see my “descriptions” made it into the production DB3000 database already...

Unfortunately, we haven't heard from Feltan in a few years. Hope he is alright.

I agree that these are great scenarios, I think there are three: Under African Skies, Havana Daydreamin and Goodnight Irene.

When we couldn't get hold of him I did a couple fixes on Havana Daydreamin and put it in the community file, but I don't think the other two ever made it there.

I can touch those up and add them if people want but I feel bad fixing other people’s work. But they are really good scenarios and it’s a shame to see them lost.

Thanks for the plug on the Northern Fury series, and Airborne Rifles and I are writing a book, hopefully but unlikely to rival Clancy.

I for one would love to see both updated. I've played and replayed all 3 and it would be great to see them compatible with the latest versions.

I upgraded Under African Skies and Goodnight Irene and they were in the community pack a few years ago. I really don't know if they are still playable with the latest version, but they should be in community pack.

I see them now, there they are in the Community Pack. Great, thanks

I was playing the '2017' version of this scenario last night (way later than I should have) when I realized the Cargo Ops are not enabled(?), though the pop-up orders there are orders for Cargo Ops. I have CoW, but no options to do anything w/ cargo. I then opened the scenario in the Editor and enabled cargo ops under 'features', rebuilt it (I hope this didn't screw up the scenario) but if I re-start the scenario I still can't perform cargo drops, etc... Am I missing something?

While on the subject, I notice many scenarios are built w/o the options for Aircraft Damage, Night / Weather Effect, etc... disabled. Not sure why this is the case, but if I enable these options, will the scenario still be playable?

The game is 5 years old this month and Chains of War with Cargo and AC damage was only released at the end of 2017 - so any scenario built before that is unlikely to have the features enabled unless the author goes back to fix that up.

Feltan's scenarios are from 2014/15 so well before those features.

For AC damage, things should work fine as long as you update to the latest DB in the editor. Using AC Damage with an old DB will give you wonky results because the damage points aren't properly configured - if it works at all, not sure.

For Cargo to work, you need to add cargo to the scenario. Simply enabling the feature won't do you any good. Most older scenarios used a form of teleport to simulate cargo effects, and those built in the last couple years probably have Lua based 'add unit' features.

So you're not missing anything, its just an old scenario.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply, Gunner.

That's what I'm getting at. There ARE cargo 'missions' in this scenario. I get some orders via a Pop-up to deliver supplies (etc...) and I'll send a helicopter with cargo to the indicated area, hover at min altitude, but nothing seems to happen. I watched Stoic Frog's play-though on YouTube, and he seemed to have the same issue.

For comparison, I've played other scenarios with 'boarding ops' where you got close enough to an enemy ship for x minutes and it would fire an event that said you have completed the task / get points, even though 'boarding' is not a feature of the game.

Given that the scenario pre-dates the actual cargo ops feature, are the pop-up orders to deliver the supplies just 'window dressing' in this scenario, and don't actually fire an event / give points on completion?

I cannot remember. It could be window dressing, it could give you points, or it could be an event that isn't working.

I'll take a look when I get a chance.

OK

Not sure if these are the events your speaking of but it looks like they give you points.

You should get notification in the log and if you check your scoring log: Game menue/Scoring/Scoring Log tab you should see something.

It would be good if you got a message with this event but Feltan didn't include any.

Hope this helps.

Yep. Those (and the first one you get about dropping supplies via the Ospreys).

I didn't recall seeing anything in the Message Log at the time, but since you mentioned the scoring log, I re-opened a save (before most of the cargo drop missions, but after the Osprey mission) and took a look and sure enough there's an entry:
1/31/2017 2:26 PM: Score changed from 19 to 24. Reason: Event Action: '<Redacted>Supplies Air Dropped<Redacted>' has been fired (part of Event: '<Redacted>Supplies Air Dropped<Redacted>(+5 VP)')

(Redaction to avoid spoilers.)

So, I guess I did 'do something', even though I didn't have to manually perform any CoW 'cargo' actions, and I didn't get any other feedback via the UI that the mission was completed. A pop-up would have been nice, but it was a great scenario, and I'm not going to knock Feltan (too much...). ;)

I appreciate you taking the time to look into this and clearing up my confusion.
