2.7.1 Should I be downloading and patching every time there is a new "Hot Patch Version" released?

Post by cnkrapert »

Hello,

I am currently running version 2.7.1 that I downloaded a few months ago using the MWif in-game update button. I mostly play solitaire games but I do like the net-play function. My game is working pretty good and only crashes every once in a while. I don't know the Wif rules well enough to catch the game if it is enforcing rules the wrong way, etc.

Question: Should I be patching my game every time there is a new Hot Patch released?

I only use the in-game updater about once a month to check and see if there is a new version of the game. It hasn't found a new update in a few months now.

What are the Hot Patches for?

Thank you,
Christopher

My advice would be to wait a few days, and then download the hot patch. The few days is to make sure the hot patch does not itself contain a worse bug; unfortunately that has been known to happen. Hot patches are usually made when a major bug has been fixed. They will also contain all other fixes made since the last patch, some of them very minor. The most recent patch, for example, contained a fix for the US sometimes getting the wrong number of entry chits added or removed during DoWs. (If it makes US entry come a turn early or late, it's important!)
I thought I knew how to play this game....

I agree with @Courtnay.

You can certainly try newer patches, but each is a potential land mine with new problems. I have been running on 2.8.4 for the last few months because of some show stopper issues. The main problem is once you have upgraded your program and subsequently save your game, you can't really go back. You could change the version number, but that is a bit of a hack that could result in other problems. I will keep a copy of the previous (acceptable) patch version and a game file and try out the new version and if I can get through a turn without any major problems, I will keep it and move on.

My personal opinion: version 2.7.5 is the best one so far.
But I have sort of a convoy-fetish. If convoy routing does not work correctly (and in 2.7.5 it does), I do not want to play the game because it feels like MWiF is mocking the allies and letting the axis win [;)].
