Game freezes, system crashes

Post by Javolenus »

Bought & installed the game. Generated a scenario & saved it. Opened the scenario & began issuing movement commands to units. Pressed the "Fast" button to speed up the action. Game immediately froze & my whole system crashed--couldn't Alt+Tab out or even start Task Manager. Had to power down. Not a good start.

tm.asp?m=4554220

without the zip attached as asked, it hard to see any or all of the information as requested

log file, error file report file etc

not enough information given to form a opinion on what is or could be an issue

the only part of the report which isn't needed and imo doesn't need to be left in is below, but as always it's best to uploaded it zipped and attached and not just pasted into a reply,...

------------------
System Information
------------------
Time of this report: 11/15/2018, 20:52:19
Machine name: BLANK
Machine Id: BLANK
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17763) (17763.rs5_release.180914-1434)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

and everything else right to the bottom the the report is useful to us, to help us help you better,...

Hi & thanks for quick reply. Video card is Intel(R) GMA & AFAIK the drivers are up to date. Have uploaded DXdialog file to this message.

none default DPI

User DPI Setting: 120 DPI (125 percent)
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)

default is 96 DPI as standard,...

Card name: Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset
Display Memory: 1695 MB
Dedicated Memory: 64 MB
Shared Memory: 1631 MB
Current Mode: 1680 x 1050 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor Name: Generic PnP Monitor
Monitor Model: L22W-5
Monitor Id: FUS0735
Native Mode: 1680 x 1050(p) (60.262Hz)

Driver Date/Size: 2/11/2011 drivers too old

High Definition Audio Device again drivers too old 11/20/2010

even with up to date drivers, your pc doesn't meet the min req as per link

Game Requirements
OS: Windows 7 / 8 / 10
CPU: 1 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Graphics: OpenGL 2.0 compatible video card with 512 MB VRAM
Sound: Compatible sound card
DVD-ROM: Yes, for boxed version

shared memory isn't dedicated memory so may or may not work, and will need to check to see if up dated drivers for GPU is a OpenGL 2.0 compatible video card even :(

using shared memory means less memory for the system and is slower, so if you do a clean startup and have next to nothing loaded on the boot, it may help, but by how much is anyones guess, as it's too old a system to really play any modern game now days i'm sorry to say, while it may work, it's not really up to the task

here's the link to update to drivers or at least check to see if they are the latest for you

Code: Select all

Hi & thanks for this swift reply. OK--understood. I've installed the game on my new(er) laptop (Win10) and will try that.

I just played my generated scenario on the old desktop (Win7) again and this time I did not press the "Fast" (speed-up-time) button. Everything worked OK. No crash! :-)

One way to make the game run on old systems is to enable the 'Do not load terrain textures' option in the settings launcher. It will save hundreds of MB of video memory.

I tried the 'Do not load terrain textures' option but the game still crashed. Not only the game crashes--my whole system crashes.

Yes, my desktop is old, but runs other 2D games very well. Sometimes it is possible to complete a short scenario, but also it is possible that the game will crash.

I have a new(er) laptop and will try the game on that. Hopefully it will work.

as the old laptop doesn't support the minimum OpenGL 2.0 compatible video card with 512 MB VRAM part, i'm sometimes surprised it even runs at all, onboard video was always the poorer part of laptops which made something work well and others like some games not i'm sorry to say,...

Supported APIs for Intel® Graphics Controllers are hit and miss depending on hardware and O/S being run, plus driver version, with some not being kept up to date, they just no longer work with some modern games.
