Different Icons Mod

Post by VasFURY »

Hey Guys - great game - really enjoying it so far!

I was just wondering - are there any mods out there currently (or in the making) which would change the standard icons (and nato icons) for the units into more "gamey" ones - i.e. binoculars for scouts, tank model for tanks, ifv model for BTRs and such, etc etc - I have never served and with these Nato icons its sometimes difficult to understand at a glance which unit is what unless it is clicked on.

I don't see such mod so far. Maybe you can try one by yourself.

There are 4 folders in data\graphic folder. Icon huge/large/medium/small, and each folder contains identical NATO icons, just their size is different. I think the important ones are nato folder, especially friend / hostile / unknown folders. You could replace those files to other icon files you want.

But I guess there might be limit of pixel dimension and size for each size. You better check with devs. I heard that too heavy graphic files would cost more CPU, hence game might be slowed a bit.

NATO icons are easier than you might think. For example: The big X for infantry - think, crossed rifles. The oval for armor - ever seen a picture of a WW1 tank - you'll get it. Artillery with it's single dot. Make sense. And most of the rest are the same. Even the icons that represent single vehicles make sense if you take a look.

Don't give up on NATO icons - kind'a like learning to read - once you do you'll never forget and most of the real wargames available use them. I know I'm about to tick some people off but of those games that use pictograph style icons the only one I can think of that is what I would describe as a serious/real wargame is The Operational Art of WAR. <I'm ducking right now and donning my flame retardents suit - be gentle - I'm old>

One great thing about NATO icons is that they all look very distinct. You can look at a lot of icons and see what's in them very quickly.

It takes a lot of design skill to make pictograph icons that are easy to tell apart when there are a lot of them or when zoomed out.

One option is to go to the options menu and toggle the 'NATO icons' off and adjust the 'Unit sprite scale' to max. Then it will look like this.
