Post by RWagle »

Getting stuttering in both phases of game, UI and In-game. Used up all the tricks I know between going full screen and windowed, changing the settings I know of. All I've got in my bag of tricks is a hand-full of lint now....

Any help is appreciated...

No, it's a constant thing that's regular as a clock. Not only when things are moving around or scrolling the map is happening. Even on the opening artwork at the UI at the beginning...getting some spec put up now.

NVIDIA 860m with an older driver that works best for most of my games (388.71)

as soon as some reports are posted, i'll have more of an idea on what maybe causing it and what can be done about it etc

I'm thinking the older graphics driver is responsible but it's needed for one of my flight sims as the new drivers cause it to crash.
Probably going to have to deal with it if I want to play both.

Do you have a dual disc system? ie an ssd and an hdd? If so - from experience in other games - if you have the game installed on the hdd then head parking can cause stutter. I had this issue for a long time in combat mission. I have a fix now, so let me know if that's your position.

Sometimes after the system has been running for a long time, or if available memory has been low, FPS goes down. Try to reboot the system, if you haven't already.

imo on the laptop spec,.

if you look at some of the advice offered here, even with the older drivers, i feel i maybe able to help alter and even stop the stutter,

tm.asp?m=4554998

as some times it's just lack of resources and or freeing up more should help, not just this game but every game, the advice can't make it worse and can only help, so imo well worth the time and effort so good luck

ps, one last thing, a poor anti virus, eg a game unfriendly one can cause many issue, as a game friendly one has a game mode built in, eg it won't scan when a game is used, where poor ones scan when a given amount of cpu is free etc

defraging a HDD can also help, as well as making sure you have no power saving modes active as per my link above, and don't forget to dust your cpu fans, anti static air spray can keep a fan clean and running for twice as long as not doing it, and in the process keep the cpu cooler, which makes it last longer and work better

I have a single SSD (NTFS format) and I've already rebooted the computer several times and still have the stutter.

SDD don't need defraging either, so that's not an issue, but still my links may help if you give it a try

As weird as it sounds, if you are using an optical mouse, try using it on a new surface (pad, book, something with a flat (non-gloss) finish. Depending on your mouse, drivers and game polling rates any optical jitter can slow system processing.

Ok then...updated the driver and it seems to have cleared up. The mouse thing didn't seem to work as the mouse cursor did not stutter with the game running behind it. Weird. But this problem of a stutter seems to have cleared up with the driver. All works smoothly now. I knew holding on to an old driver like that would become an issue after awhile so it's not surprising.

Thank you for the prompt response on this issue, y'all get a big thumbs up for sure for the help here!

Great work on this game folks, I'm enjoying it a lot!

CpnDarwin, I still love the Flash-point Campaigns: Red Storm! Great work!

I love FCRS too, Capn Darwin, but - as you might know from my posts - can't run it because it insists on using the intel on board graphics instead of the nvidia (and I've tried everything, including everything Zakblood has periodically sugested, so no need to suggest again, zakblood!!) - so my question is - how come this game - AB - switches effortlessly to the nvidia driver as soon as it starts? What do they do that you don't? Can you ask them, and change it? Please?

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help.
- First, go to Device Manager and uninstall the Nvidia graphics driver.
- Next is to open Programs and Features then uninstall anything related to Nvidia.
- Once uninstalled, download and install the latest driver.
- Here's the link:

Code: Select all

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
- Reboot the laptop once the latest driver has been installed and set Nvidia again as the default GPU.

now on re installing, here's my guide on how to do it correctly

tm.asp?m=4491486

this for some has helped, but not for all hardware, some laptops for some reasons refuse to let you make the Nvidia one the default in any O/S, but so far in windows 10 users, it's been a low number, less than an odd one, so really comes down to make and model i'm sorry to say.

on your points raised, good question

but also not something i can ask, but a developer maybe able to if they wish, but that's there call, not mine

Lol. Well, it's true I don't remember trying to reinstall the Nvidia from scratch. But I'm sure I did. Nevertheless, since I don't remember, maybe I'll try again. What do you mean by 'Programs and Features' Zack? Do you mean I should manually search for anything related to Nvidia?

It seems to me that if AB regularly triggers the right card then there must be something about a program that does that, and AB has it, and FCRS doesn't. Maybe the AB programmers could tell Capn Darwin what it is. Perhaps that's a stupidly simplistic thought...

you can always use the tool, 3rd party, but works well as long as you follow the instructions, eg remove the pc from the internet, so it doesn't auto download the files again etc

Code: Select all

life's never as simple as it first looks tbh,

each is a totally different engines, each engine has it's own way of working, to understand how the pc and O/S relates to hardware somewhat depends on what API (stands for Application Programming Interface) does.

which is harder and deeper than i can go in a short few sentences etc,

Code: Select all

https://www.howtogeek.com/351522/how-to-choose-which-gpu-a-game-uses-on-windows-10/

this explains some of the just windows 10 points to somewhat help and understand more.

some games have options on what hardware to use, some don't, other pick the default, others just use a what ever is on the system of a given type, eg DX12 or vulkan based etc etc

You can right click on the game application file ( the .exe file you usually use to run the game).

Then you will see an option -

“ run with integrated graphics”

or

“ run with dedicated graphics” .

Click on it and it will let you change which card should run that application .

Not only games, we can do this for any other applications .

if it doesn't show the option, it's because either you only have one, or it's not an option on the given O/S

Not even that simple, Zack. I do have that option and it doesn't work. I select it and the game runs the same, defaulting to the intel card. I know, amongst other things, because I have a light which illumintates blue or orange, depending what graphics processor is being used. I'm on win 10, by the way. I've given up on FCRS. As I said, something in AB faultlessly makes it the case that the Nvidia is always selected. That is lacking in FCRS.

Tried the nvidia reinstall and it didn't work. Not for FCRS. BUT, it did solve the slight stutter I had started in AB, which is what brought me to this thread in the first place. So, thanks!

no problem, glad at least some of it worked, with the FCRS part, that for me is still hardware and not software (game) related, as for some it has worked for them and they can swap over on a dual GPU laptops, while it seems you can't, so sorry about that part, if i was in front of the pc, i'd get around it one way or another, so never give up, as it only takes ne piece of software eg driver related to alter, and this part may change also, so next try for you is,

a total driver update,

Code: Select all

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/

this is the last resort mind you, as this won't only do the GPU, but the whole system if you let it.

while some items on your motherboard may not get updated this way, and for that you would need the motherboard makers web page to update those parts, then if all this fails, you have done all at least you can to try it on your end etc, good luck
