Leader criteria

Post by PetrOs »

Against AI, I rarely cared about leaders. Being in PBEM since a while, I see the leader difference of course... My question is, what are the effects of particular leader qualities applied to different unit types? Which criteria do you have when assigning leaders, what a perfect leader should can in following units:

Fighter group
Bomber group/anti-land
Bomber group/anti-naval
Recon group
Patrol group

Carrier
Surface combat ship
ASW/Escort ship
Landing ship
Sub

Carrier TF
Surface TF
Bombardment TF
ASW TF
Landing TF

Infantry unit
Armor unit
Land HQ
Air HQ

No-one knows for sure. According to devs, combat has hundreds of leader checks under the hood. For all unit types, I try to put balanced leaders (all general skills like Leader/Inspiration/Admin/Agrro at least 51 value) and for LCU/NAVAL/AIR units their dedicated skill must also be at least 51. I just avoid leaders with skills value of 50 or lower.

This is a very broad question with almost too many permutations to answer in one thread.

As always - it depends upon the tactical and strategic situation.

The FAQ for newbies drills down the Leadership matrix / bonus.

The only point I would opine upon - is that 'history' reflects the Leadership statistics - at least in my opinion.

It is clear for example that good Allied CV Task force commanders based upon their stat spread are :

(1) Bull Halsey, (2) Marc Mishner, (3) Ray Spruance, (4)Jocko, etc etc and of course this parallels history.

I find this similar for LCU and Invasion Flotilla commanders etc.

Look to history - and compare. Sort by stats.

(The Chinese OOB is more difficult for me not being as familiar with the details).

There is only one particular Allied leader stats I might 'dispute' - but it is probably personal opinion rather than fact. I find Adm Clifton Sprague US Carrier commander Taffy 3 at Leyte to be under valued. Clifton in my opinion - made clear headed - critical - concise decisions in crisis. Further then guided Taffy 3 through the first wave of Kamikaze. I would rank Sprague higher in inspiration and air...

I found this old thread discussing LCU leaders. Note that the link is to page 3 of the discussion, so you should go to the beginning and read from there:

There're a number of good threads discussing the matter. Try a search. I for now don't have time. Sorry.

Scen 100, Allies

Just had a look in Tracker at Chinese leaders elligible for leading large combat units (corps). Of 200 leaders available, only SIX have average competence (skill 51 value) in all five stats: Leadership, Inspiration, Admin, Land, Aggro.

For HQ leaders, out of 70 available, only THREE have skill 51 in all five skills.
