Mutankiang

This appears to be a different transliteration of Mutanjiang and it is NOT Japanese. Instead,
apparently the Japanese name was Botankou. [Matrix location 354, hex 111, 42]. This is the location
where the First Tank Division formed. It is also the location of the First Tank Group when the Pacific
War (most AE scenarios) began. At that time, the First Tank Group had three tank regiments - the 3rd,
5th and 9th - plus a maintenance unit, a logistics unit and a HQ.

Mudanjiang (Chinese: characters invalid in Forum posts; Manchu: Mudan bira) is a prefecture-level city in the southeast part of Heilongjiang province, People's Republic of China. It was called Botankou under Japanese occupation.

The 1st Tank Group was formed in 1940 at Tungning (modern-day Dongning). It was known to the Japanese as Tonei. This was close to the Soviet border, about 100 miles ESE of Mudanjiang (which, as you point out, was known as Botankou by the Japanese).

The 1st Tank Division, formed in June 1942, was stationed (and presumably formed) at Ning'an, about 12 miles SW of Mutanjiang/Botankou.

Just note that, with regards to the Tank Groups in Manchukuo - mobilization of the maintenance and ammunition trains units in question was only authorized by IGHQ on 1 August 1941, so it is hard to tell to what extent they were fully formed up by 8 December 1941.

Correct. Those were two special heavy gun "regiments" raised by the Kwantung Army. The Botankou unit had a strength of 2,191, while the Tonei unit was slightly smaller in authorized personnel (1,548 men). They were organized in two battalions, each with two two-gun batteries of Type 45 240mm howitzers. Each battery had 17 heavy artillery prime movers and two 10-ton cranes to move the disassembled pieces of the guns and set them up. Both units had no direct stockage of the 180-kg semi-fixed rounds, and were dependent on direct supply from the rear.

Have not checked to see if you folks are using the Japanese source I provided in a prior post on another thread, but the info is recent and a long time friend from the old "STEEL PANTHERS" days..
