NLOS ATGM systems

Post by mmacguinness »

Can the game engine handle NLOS ATGM systems such as Spike NLOS or the Strix 120mm Mortar AT system?

No, not currently. Now Fire and Forget is something that can be done. Javelins and Spikes are deadly weapons in AB.

I thought not. Still, bummer.

I have dreams of wiping out armored formations with small lightly armored units comprised of AMOS 120mm mortar systems loaded up with Strix and with Centauros and/or light vehicles loaded with Lahat. A few Spike NLOS for more distant targets. Drones and recon/SF as spotters.

NLOS systems don't seem to get much love. I get the targeting issue. What is it I am not getting?

It just requires an additional game mechanic to be introduced into the game. It is one of those things that needs to be implemented if we want to move post-1991, together with UAVs, radar targeting systems, PGMs etc.

Clarification: My final remark above wasn't directed at AB. It was that despite what appear to be huge advantages, NLOS systems have relatively low sales, for example, only Sweden and Switzerland use Strix.

Spike NLOS for example has seen a significant sales numbers over the last few years. The price of those systems is the chief reason for the slow propagation, but as more designs are entering service and technology is maturing, they are getting increasingly affordable to wider number of forces.

Didn't British have some cold war systems that had an observer guide the missile while the launcher is concealed?

I think you mean the Swingfire missile remote control, where guidance unit could be offset from the launcher so the latter could remain concealed. Such design feature was seen on some other, particularly MCLOS, ATGMs of the era.

And also APS.

Spike NLOS is quite a long range system. On the other hand Strix is a PGM mortar round. Basically, a mortar round with a smart terminal IR guidance package, no propulsion system, no navigation system. Should be MUCH cheaper. Lahat also., an artillery round with a guidance package. Pricewise in between, but should be closer to Strix than Spike
Spike & Lahat - Israeli. Strix - Swedish.
Their big sales problem? Not invented in US/UK/France.

These need to happen. [:D]
