When taking out big pockets of resistance, move into adjacent hexes with lower quality squads or half-squads until they draw off all of the enemy fire and then move with stack of high quality troops adjacent.
One drawback to this is a human opponent wouldn't fall for this tactic, but it is what it is.

Also, depending on what one has available, you can move armour within 2 hexes (not adjacent, coz they can be CC'd), and that improves the to hit odds, or use that armour to get behind the pocket, cutting off any routs. In addition, not to forget that AFV's offer some cover for moving troops as well. There's also the option of assault moves - move one unit at a time, and even a human opponent will eventually be forced to react, lest they, otherwise allow you to build up your hex stacks, unopposed, one unit at a time!

In the attack:

1) Send scouts ahead (infantry - HS if you have some - moving double time or halftracks/armoured cars) to discover enemy positions.
2) Punch a hole in a narrow sector of the enemy line
3) Break through to the rear and run towards the VP hexes; the AI might fire at you (but try to avoid this) but will not react by moving units
4) Kill the enemy units near the VP hexes; don't wake up the sleeping AI by taking them.
5) Set up a warm and deadly welcome for the AI units.
6) Occupy the VP hexes: the AI will wake up and attempt to retake the VP hexes
7) Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war [:D]
