Tips on Navies

Hello--I'm brand new the to the series and still trying to get a hang of the mechanics. For my first game, I'm playing the full 1939 Scenario and I've given myself only the UK to control, so I can watch and learn a bit.

I have a number of questions, but one big one is how to properly use navies. The UK starts with a great assortment of BBs, heavy cruisers, light cruisers, destroyers, subs, and carriers.

I'm wondering how much I should be grouping them up, and also how to best use each of them against other naval targets.

Also: if something is set to Convoy Raiding, does this reduce its overall combat abilities?

I'm also a little fuzzy on Naval Supply. If I use supply points up raiding, do I restore them by going back to port?

Any tips appreciated.

Naval supply is replenished by going back to port. You actually don't even have to be in a port, just close to one. Although going into a port is the only way to get back to Lv 10 supply. You lose one point of supply for each hex you are away from a port. So 1 hex = 9 supply, 2 hexes = 8, etc.

Supply radiates out of ports in the same way it does on land.
Press the 'S' key and you'll see that you can keep ships permanently in the North Sea. Due to the Amount Of UK bases supply is rarely a problem.

Convoy raiding does not reduce combat strength.

Actually I'm almost totally wrong. Once out of port range naval units only lose supply if they cruise, raid or engage in combat. It can be restored by returning towards a port.

Thanks! Does the supply restore by being *close* to port, or returning into port? Also, do you have to sit there for a turn?

Both. You move to a Port or close by one turn, Next turn you are good to go. Just remember the only way to get to Lv 10 supply is to actually be in a port. Like a port in mainland Europe as an example for the Axis. Or the UK for the Allies.
