Upgrade delay?

Post by rob89 »

I find rather strange that the upgrade delay is equal to only one turn (1 month or less, if shorter intervals are chosen), especially for aircraft units and ships, which normally took much longer time.

I did not find a function to manage the upgrade delay in the editor.

What do you think about?

thanks

Hi

It's set to one turn, and there isn't an option in the Editor to change it.

Must admit it's not something I've ever thought about changing, as having it set to one turn keeps things simple. It's certainly true that some upgrades could potentially take longer, but if we factor in time required for repairs/reinforcements then units can already spend 2-5 turns out of action (5 being how long it can take to get a badly damaged Carrier fully repaired and upgraded).

IMHO, for a degree of acceptable realism, some level of delay on upgrade/repair, at least for ships, there should be ...

Well, the repair is limited to 5 per turn.

But, yes, the upgrades should be limited to-say- 2 per turn too.

But historically (to counter your "normally it would take more time")... gear wasn't upgrading as such.

An existing Panzer tank was not refitted to become a Tiger tank.
The Germans didn't even upgraded a Tiger I tank to a Tiger II tank.

They just made brand new Tiger, moving the crew (partially) around.

Indeed!,

historically, to follow your example, a PzD, to move from PzIV to Panther, had to be withdrawn from the front and it took a few months for the change of vehicles and training.

Here the upgrade is almost 'instantaneous' (just 1 turn of 'stop')

Obviously for aircraft and, above all, ships the thing is even more evident ...

It would be a bit more realistic, if you could only upgrade a single point (not one level for each options, but a single point between the three) in each turn, but that would make it very tedious. And create the classic problem of making from scratch is faster and cheaper than upgrading sometimes. Also would make it better for minors, you can upgrade them to your own standard in half a year, or use them right now at limited capacity.
Also the reinforcement should be a bit more limited, only infantry should be able to go from 1 to 10 in a turn (month in the base game), most other units should only be reinforced by 3-5 points per turn, but in this case, we would also need a non limiting single point reinforcement option.

To be honest, the game pretty much already simulates the upgrade delay pretty realistically anyway. Considering that you have to take them off the front line, then upgrade them, then put them back in the front line, that's already 3 turns. Since a turn is 4 weeks anyway, that's nearly 3 months.

Perhaps there could be a readiness penalty to upgrading, but other than that, it's good as it is.

You are right!

But, indeed, in my first post I focalized the attention on aircraft and, above all, ships.
Repair / Upgrade a CV/BB/BC/CA etc was a long process.

Anyway, I play with 7 days turn (so 15 days considering the two players), that makes a difference [:)]

Personally I like things just the way they are. If this is going to be changed to suit some people then please leave an option to leave it just as it is.

You don't upgrade in most case that way, you either upgrade between front movements (so only one turn/month) or when the front advance, you just upgrade the units left behind a hex or two and next turn they usually can reach the front again, so one turn/month only.

I think it's fine as is. There are other issues like naval combat with carriers that needs more work.
