Bigger hexes and icons

Post by gliz2 »

I was wondering would it be possible to make the hexes and counters 25-33% physically bigger (counters are 32-33 pixels so something around 40-42 pixels).
After working whole day with data when I play TAOW4 on my 55" tely the things are too small for my tired eyes. I used a bit of scalling but then the sharpness is lost.

As far as I remember the sizes are coded in few lines (not in thousands). Any chance for increasing the sizes of icons and hexes?

PS. Of course this would require also the map graphics to be updated.

The counters are extracted from a file as seen below, so there would be no room to increase the counter sizes.

Do you use the 2D Huge mode ? I think that is large enough, although I don't play on my tv so I can't be sure.

After I posted that I remembered that was something I mocked up and is not what is used in TOAW IV. If you look for 'h_CounterBackground' and 'CounterBackground' in the main folders' Graphic Folder, you can see that IV is using separate icons instead of the sheet arrangement from earlier versions. I don't have time to muck with it but maybe you do. However, I wouldn't expect that this effort for IV included any hindsight into expected modding of these files. Quite the opposite, I would think.

Icons could certainly be made larger, but then you will run into the elements that are placed around the icon. This had already been done to some extent when the icons were increased by two pixels for IV.

Try changing the resolution in the .ini file. Don't know how it will work out on a 55" tv of some unspecified pixel density but it might help. Thing is the vast majority of people use a computer monitor that isn't extremely huge and so I guess that's what the game was aimed towards. When I look at my 14" monitor I wonder how I managed to see anything on it.

If duct tape doesn't fix it then you are not using enough duct tape.

Ok then, if that is not good enough you have one more option, if you aren't already aware. Ralph has given us 'Y'. [&o]

Try it and see the results. ['Shift + Y' to undo].

Actual size shown at the maximum 'Y x10', at 1280 x 1024 on a 19' flat square desk-top monitor [and at 60% original resolution in order to reduce file size for posting]. I would think that if this isn't good enough for us, then some of us may need a personal vision correction device [;)]

EDIT: Should have mentioned that this shot shows modified TOAW III Graphics, so you New Agers will see it differently.
