Staff EX 2017 - a quick go by altipueri

Post by altipueri »

I'm enjoying MikeJ19's AARs.

Seeing him start one of these Staff exercises (what are they exactly?)I thought I would have a quick go myself.

I decided to follow the instruction to get a bridge over the river Schlitz in the east even though the victory points aren't there!

I thought this would be a mini Arnhem - seize a bridge and hope the rest catch up in time; but they don't so you get hammered by landing on a tank division.

Anyway - I decided in the absence of paras that I would send all my helicopters to the south east; and dash with recce stuff to make a bridge.

I can now tell you that fighting the enemy with unarmed helicopters is a bad idea.

I did some saves so if anyone wants to see what happened please tell me how to post them.

I'll now read more of Mike's AAR to find out what somebody who knows about these things does.

The best way to do these staff exercises is to read the PDF briefings and turn off the VPs on the map and ignore them. When we do these exercises at Origins (game convention in June In Columbus Ohio) we train up a staff of players and show them their mission from the PDFs and then they plan out their courses of action and go fight the battle. It is a very good time for the 4-5 hours as the players jell into a functional staff.

I suppose you need the VPs to give the AI something to go for.

Is it possible to change the VP locations and values in a scenario without serious modding skills? E.g. drag and drop?

You can do that in the scenario editor.

This is what the position was at about half past one: I'm just about to try crossing my brand new bridges over the river Schlitz in the south east.

This is how it was with about an hour to go:

Edit - something went wrong, must have pressed wrong button - see next post for embedded picture - or load this attachment thing down as something to treasure in years to come.

I've got em surrounded like the Battered Borises of Bastognesky.

My guys get on well without talking to their HQs. Who needs officers anyway.

The result was basically a draw: I got 49%, but I got across the Schlitz river.

Up in the top right you can see a unit of 4 tanks doing nothing because I forgot about them! Perhaps they are a crew of Brits on secondment and stopped to have a cup of tea.

Do American tanks have an on board kettle like the British ones?

It was the Villers-Bocage disaster that led to the Brits tanks having an onboard kettle so that they didn't have to get out of the tank.

Anyway that game was good fun, I played it in one session that lasted about three hours until one in the morning.

I've learned:

Check whether a helicopter is armed before sending it to attack the enemy.
How to post screenshots.

The British tanks' tea kit is awesome.

Altipueri,

Well done, I enjoyed reading your AAR. Gave me a better idea of what is about to happen to me.

By the way, the Canadian LAV IIIs have a little cooker in them. It was great to have hot chocolate in the winter.

Thanks for sharing.

Well a nice sunny afternoon that I could have spent playing tennis or going for a walk I spent in front of the PC running the scenario from the Russian side which you are not supposed to do of course.

Anyway, I got 57% and this should be the final result.
