PBEM - call out reserves

Post by Chocolino »

My opponent and I started a new PBEM for Barbarossa (I play the Russian side).

We use the solitaire option and pass fwd/bwd the save file.

Initial setup did go ok and we are now in the initial DoW phase. I received the save file to call up Russian reserves.

However, the unit tray does not show up.

What I could do is in "Info/Pools" use the button "Call out reserves" button - all Russian units were selected. But I did not find a way for the unit tray to come up. So I cannot place the reserves on the map.

Is there a command or shortcut to display this tray? Or did we do something else wrong?

Thank you.

Try restoring your screen layout. That might fix this problem (it does on my end, if the set up tray doesn't appear).

Thanks - Unfortunately not.

What I will do is to email my opponent all my reserve placements so that he can enter them on his side. I am wondering if this is the better way to play this game with multiple people in general (short of NetPlay which requires that all are present at the same time)

MWIF is not designed to send files between players and have each player make their own decisions (i.e., PBEM). Most of the time it works okay, but placing reserves is one case where it doesn't.

It also would be a pain to do where there are a high density of the decision making switching between the two players. That comes up during most combats especially air-to-air combats.

Other players have found ways to handle all of this. I'll leave it to them to describe how they enabled a quasi-PBEM system.

Understand - I was aware that PBEM is not officially supported.

But seeing many games played this way I hoped for some work-around or best practices to make it work. Just didn't want to reinvent the wheel.

I would not mind the high level of interaction which can be handled via chat and I am sure we will find something for the reserves as well.

But if an experienced PBEM player has some recommendations (or if there is already a thread that I have overlooked) I would be grateful.

Thanks again.

Hi

We have used two ways to place reserves.

1) send file from phase before calling reserves (set up ready or opponent impulse ready) so that they show up when you click green button to proceed.

2) opponent gives instructions like
7-3 INF to city A
5-5 MECH to city B
etc

And one player places all reserves.

PBE is easier when you send file only between impulsed. I always at phase where first opponent major power decides to declare war (if I roll weather after my impulse I proceed).
If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.

Thanks a lot for the input. Makes sense. We have used method (2) for now. Method (1) is probably easier, though.

Will see how the scenario plays out in this way. Number of interaction in Barbarossa should be much smaller than if you play one of the big campaigns.
