Support Vehicles?

Post by Kamen »

I would love to see ground support vehicles to make an appearance ala battletech. A smaller chasis with no arms and light armor but very fast. sound good?

And some tanks too :)

but no "repair vehicles".. those they used to spoil the Mech Commanders...

Would be cool to have some scouting vehicles and stuff....maybe ground defense posts? Turrets? Walls, you name it.

walls, etc.

"walls" could be fudged with a map editor just putting a row of mountain hexes across a section of plains, but it brings up an interesting thought, destructable terrain items. Dare I hope for such strategic toys as fuel tanks, exploding in a similar style as destroyed engines do now? I'm with you on no repair vehicles though, we dont want TOS to become a hex based mech commander. Now, a hex based mech commander with no repair vehicles and deeper character development...... ok, I'll stop making the programmer cry now :)

Something tells me that stuff won't be implemented...
it has been suggested before, far in the past. I think the end conclusion was it would be too much trouble for too little gain... Not sure though, minds may have changed...

Mmm... Destructable terrain sounds cool, though it also sounds like it would be really hard to implement.

Thumbs up to destructable terrain and fuel barrels (I actually made a titan with nothing but an engine, meant to be shot at by his teammates and blown up...) but only if the programmers can conceivably do it.

Destructable terrain is possible. Think woods - they can be reduced, so other toppings and terrain can also. The map editor and the battle module already have the basis for that. The map editor can simulate turrets and building explosions, just not in a graphic way (only sound and damage so far). It has a wide range of effects, your imagination is the limit.
No vehicles of any kind though. :p
Larkin started coding random repair bays in random maps, but he scrapped it.
BTW, in MC2 I never lost a MechWarrior, and only lost a very small number of 'Mechs in the whole game. Those repair vees were really handy, but I can't say they were good for the game.

MC1 is much more balanced and better IMO.

Though the refit truck is way overpower in it too and those repair bays are found everywhere...MC gold's new campaign was even worse and I played it through in 1 day. Got stuff too easily...

Map editor?

Post by Kamen »

I must be missing something here... what map editor? I am using the shareware version 1.4. Is the map editor only in the commercial edition?

Right. 1.2 had an editor but it was scrapped with 1.4.

About vehicles : TOS is about those big two legged beasts, no more, no less. What is the difference to a tracked vehicle holding an AC20 compared to a recon ? Both are evaluated by the same rules, so they have their weight, slots and armor. So all that 'may' be interesting is below a recon titan (a squad of soldiers with some armor piercing ability) or above assault. Is this really worth doing ?

I don't think it is. While some infantry with powered armor ala Battletech's Clan Elementals would be kind of neat, I don't think it's something that ToS needs. The game is very good as is.

the difference

Recon mechs are still mechs, and usually (though not always) have arms. vehicles are not quite fully disabled if they have their "legs" blown off, they can still fire their weapons. They have a lower sight and sensor profile, they get a bigger bonus for cover in forests and such, and cannot be knocked down or prone/crouched. They are also quite fun to swarm an enemy mech with, IMO :)

Titans are not quite fully disabled when they have their legs blown off either - unless you're foolish enough to not put the Titan's weapons where they should be ;) It also depends on your facing when your legs are blown off, for both Titans and vehicles.
You forgot about vehicles having a very good chance of being frozen in place everytime their tracks are *hit* (not destroyed), and their turrets having the same problem. And their problems in crossing the various terrain types, depending on if they're wheeled/tracked/hover.
As for profile, a Titan can crouch to reduce its profile (defensive mod). That's the whole point of crouching. And it gives you a to hit bonus :D

I never knew that before. Learning that little tidbit of tactic made starting this whole thread worth it :D (yes, I am still a newb, but learning!)

/me flashes his 'I beat Hetzer... And lived to tell about it!' badge

btw, i think my record against hetz is something like 2-6... as little as 4 losses, as many as 10 ;) but still... 1:3 or 1:6 ratio isnt bad, against Hetz, the Headhunter.

/me hunts Legs and Engines (So keep all your engines in the CENTER torso, where it's nice and easy for me to hit ;) )
