I'd say the one that lost his ship(s)?

In many instances, more than just ships were at stake.

Lost interest when I saw Adolf Hitler come up. I hope Scheer and Beatty make the list though. Would be a travesty without them.

"Though he technically wasn't an admiral, he was in supreme commander of Germany's navy during World War II. He was too hands on, not giving generals and admirals the breathing room needed to do their jobs...."

Donitz.

He thought he could take on the RN and then the USN combined. To compound this he became the last leader of the German Nazi Reich at the end of the war.

Correct, he wasn't an Admiral so why waste time with his inclusion when there are plenty of Admirals to consider?

But regardless of whether they are in the list or not, my vote is a tie between Beatty and Scheer; Beatty because he wasn't fit to command a destroyer let alone a battle squadron, and Scheer because of his awful handling of the German fleet at Jutland.

Does it count that I managed to sink the Austrian navy in a game of Rise of Prussia?

Mmmmmm. [;)]

I have heard some war gamers state they've been in command of HMS Warspite when she's been sunk. I think they should be banned from war gaming for truly achieving the impossible and crimes against warfare.

There is a a bloke who has a you tube channel called Drachinifel and he is very critical of Beatty. Very good and informative channel for WW1 and WW2 naval matters https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4mftU ... vsVXZh7RTw

It lists Lutjens, but only because the Bismarck got sunk. That seemed inevitable, though, considering the odds it faced. But he should be on the list for nixing pursuing the Prince of Wales after sinking the Hood. She was down to one functional gun and would have been easy prey. Even Hitler questioned that decision. (So he could be right once in a while).

And, by the way, if Villeneuve is on the list, doesn't that diminish Nelson? If every Admiral who lost was a bad Admiral, can we really consider any Admiral a good Admiral?

Well given that arguably the biggest single factor in Bismarck getting sunk was Lutjens decision to break radio silence after she'd shaken off her pursuers, that Bismarck was sunk can largely be placed at his door.

The odds actually weren't that great. The British capital ships were running out of fuel, and iirc, were heading the wrong way. But for Lutjens' ridiculous decision there is every chance Bismarck would have been home in time for tea and medals.

Not necessarily. Gamelin was a total arsehead but Manstein, Guderian and co still get the kudos for Case Yellow.

Hindsight is 20/20. It's easy to criticize these people when they didn't have 1% of the information that we do. My kids were terrible admirals in the bath. Their ships always ended up at the bottom of the tub.

What if you have been in command of the Italian fleet that sunk HMS Warspite?
