Night Mist + Colour Light Maps (Fulda Released)

Post by CCIP-subsim »

So, after a relatively successful attempt at it in Grozny, I've decided to try my hand at "painting" similar soft night (light) layers for the other maps as well - starting with Fulda.

The idea is basically a somewhat "softer" form of lighting, which along with the original "dots" for streetlight incorporates additional colours, including a "warmer" glow to residential and industrial areas, blue-ish mist in low lying areas near water, and light pollution over populated areas in general. Also added are some extra point light sources - in the case of the Fulda Gap map, the autobahns, the border fence, and factory buildings + paved ground areas + the airfield at Fulda now have their own lighting.

And Fulda is ready for download - check the first post for link!

It's a relatively subtle effect, but I'm happy with the results. Couple of more screenshots below [:)]

What a fantastic work! Are those fogs real? I mean, fog is well known to block visible light and IR. Do these effects influence on LOS and detection?

Nope, its purely a visual effect! (Unless the light maps are actually used in LOS calculations in the game, which I really don't think they are). Which I think is for the best, since the visuals are static - I.e. the fog will not move, and will visually look the same regardless of conditions.

Which is why I've made it as generic as possible and kept it pretty subtle, so it looks reasonable for any weather settings, and doesn't jump out too much that it becomes a distraction while playing.

It's 100% just for atmosphere only!

Just a slight bump to note that I've added this mod to the Steam Workshop as well. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the Workshop doesn't allow the game's default files to be overwritten - so it is instead included as a separate map, listed in the menu as "Fulda Gap (soft lights)". However, you can still install it "the old way" - simply download the file from the first post, and follow the instructions to replace the original lights.
