Who ever made Seabee thanks!

Post by jagsdomain »

Seabee works good. It does make my game run slower but the full screen is great!.

Recent Youtubers I have seen are using a different map that looks great. Does anyone know of different maps and how to install them.

If your game seems to be running slow it is likely the switches are not optimal. Please post your switch string here so we can make suggestions.

The other thing that can slow down video tasks like scrolling is having too many in-game overlays on the map. For example, if you turned on the "range circles" for air units, every time you move the screen a smidgeon the video card or chip has to recalculate the location of the range circle lines on the screen and redraw them. Same for ship range circles, search arcs, road and railroad displays, the F6 hexside terrain display, the W hex side ownership feature, etc. Turn off all this extra stuff and memorize the quick keys to turn them on when you need them, then turn them off again.

Also remember to save the game and exit when it has been running for a turn or two and things get even slower. I think this is a build-up of all the information that you looked at during the course of the turn being held in RAM until RAM is full and it must swap with the hard disk every time you access additional info. Restarting the game clears all the stuff from RAM. For example, I have just exited my game because when I clicked on a TF to bring up the information screen, the picture showing the TF type was missing. I have played several turns without a restart so it is time.

A solution to that problem of it getting slower over time might be to use something like CCleaner to clear out memory dumps and temporary files. Also to clean the registry of unnecessary items.

It is also very useful to do those things, especially the registry, every time Windows updates.

Very interesting. What is the provenance of this utility? Around for years? No issues with cleaning things it shouldn't have? No info sent out to the distributor or author? All round safe - comes with a condom? [:D]

It has been around a LONG time and it is free, although there is a paid version. You get to set what you want it to remove on the cleaning part. It is also better at removing unwanted programs and add-ons than the utility provided by the programmers.

On the recommends of you gents, and ignoring the horridness of Zorch's revelation, I've downloaded it and run it. Thanks for the tip.

There is a place, bleepingcomputer.com, that has a lot of tools to download for the computer.

I would advise against using CCleaner to clean your registry. Funny things happen. I only use CC to delete files.

I have never had a problem using CCleaner to clean the registry.

I've used the product and never had a problem with it, although TBH I don't recall if I used it for the reg. Probably not though knowing myself. All this stuff may be done manually as well, just that CCleaner does it so much quicker.

Keep testing the configurations and you will come up with one that works pretty good for you.

I have used quite a few utility products over the years, CCleaner as well. It is pretty good as a free product.

For the last 5 years or so I have bought and used IOBit products, mostly their Advanced System Care Pro, Uninstaller (a real godsend), SmartDefrag Pro (less important with SSDs) and Driver Booster (with reservations).
No real issues but I don't let the apps do "everything" as it is overkill and can slow down your rig. I say reservations with regards to Driver Booster because it is great initially at checking all your drivers, system or otherwise and finding any updates, downloading them and then prompting you to OK update installs. There is a free version too. It works well, but do sections of drivers at a time, DO NOT choose ALL drivers update or it will take an insanely long time with soft windows driver "reboots" constantly. Also, my intuition tells me that after the first couple of searches and updates, Driver Booster starts "making up" new drivers found messages wanting you to install when there is no difference. So I just use their Uninstaller to get rid of Driver Booster after a few weeks or the first big update and enjoy the latest driver performance/compatibility. Most won't want to spend the $$ for the pro versions and that's not really necessary to improve your setup in my experience.

SSD's don't require defrag. In fact its advised not to defrag an SSD.

CC cleaner is good but be careful with registry cleaning.

Like flash drives, if you defrag a SSD you will shorten its lifespan. [:@]
