Thoughts on mobility

Post by ThunderLizard11 »

Just finished an unsuccessful Allied campaign and noticed that my Axis opponent did not upgrade their armor and mech. inf. units with mobility. That got me wondering whether it's a good idea to use those MPP for more corps or other purposes. What are folks experience with this and how many units is it worth spending the MPP on?

I found mobility not as important in WaW as it is in WiE, I rarely bother updating german units with it or even researching it with the Allies.

I would argue that the japanese might have use for it for China (to overcome ZoC and difficult terrain) but the japanese dont really have much problem defeating china anyway, so it'd be kind of overkill

How does mobility effect ZOC?

Mobility is far too expensive to be worth it. Maybe for a heavy tank unit, even then I would rather have more units. Mobility needs to give slightly higher combat stats. I'd also suggest that for the US mobility should be much cheaper or even come free for all units.

If I understand mobility correctly, it gives a unit an extra action point. Moving onto a mountain hex requires 3 action points. But if an enemy is exerting ZoC over that hex, it will require an additional action point to be able to move in.

Assuming an army has 6 supply and mobility, it has 4 action points. Therefore. It could move onto a mountain hex that the eneny is exerting ZoC over.

I dont completely understand ZoC calculations myself, so if anyone can correct me please do

That's pretty much it, it gives you extra movement and sometimes it'll enable you to move further than you might have been able to in the presence of the enemy or over rough terrain.

With the supply changes introduced in V1.03 I am beginning to think that upgrading units destined for the Eastern front is a waste of MPP's.

I still think it may be worth it for units going to NA

Or certain units like HQ's, artillery + the occasional corps to try and grab a undefended town or for use in restricted terrain.

Definitely limited use though. Way to expensive for mass usage. The AI should learn from that for Germany as they seem to spend a lot on it.

Mobility is too expensive for most German units and rightly so as they just didn't have the fuel. I do add it to artillery, AA guns and HQ's. However, Mobility is essential in the jungles, pretty much if you want to move at all. I do add mobility to most Allied units, as the cost is less.

In WiE I realized in my very first game, that mobility upgrades are far too expensive to be considered worthwhile. Those MPP are sorely missing in research and other areas. I never tried it in WaW, but I guess it's the same here.

Given the lack of maneuver room in NEFrance in 1940 I find that if the German units are mechanized it is far easier to attack "Mongol" style (attack with unit #1, then unit #1 retreats vacating hex for unit #2 to move in and attack, etc.).

I agree that mechanizing all Axis unit for Russian front is prohibitively expensive, but the extra AP comes in handy when maneuvering through "terrain" to attack.

My current game as Allies is in early 1942; virtually all the German AI forces on the Eastern Front have been upgraded with mobility, armored tech or infantry weapons and anti-aircraft . . . from my perspective Mobility is an essential investment. A little pricey, perhaps, but it ultimately yields a more capable unit. The Chinese reached mobility before the Japanese and are running circles around the Empire of the Rising Sun. When you've got bad weather, rough terrain, rivers, ZOCs, poor infrastructure and movement after combat to contend with, you'll appreciate the extra action points.
