Syria SAM Sites

Post by kevinkins »

Are the SAM sites we can import onto the map to speed scenario design still largely appropriate for use? They were part of the 2013 release of Command. I am thinking there are far fewer today. Anyone have insight into this. Thanks!

Thanks .. I am too. My main concern is that the import from 2013 contains a tremendous number of fixed SAM sites. I am not sure how many of these are operational. Syria seems to have adopted mobile systems from Russia. I was thinking the fixed sites from the past are largely obsolete and not in operation. So I need something relatively realistic to go on for my scenario idea. In the LIVE scenario "Old Grudges Never Die" Syria has far less sites than the 2013 import does. They are a mix of fixed and mobile (50/50) clustered around air bases and in turn cities. Thing is, we never read in the new about fixed sites anymore. Having nothing else to go by, the Grudges model seems best right now.

Looks like they used an SA-5 in 2017 from a battery near Damascus.

More on the SA-5:

"Admittedly, years of civil war have caused the loss of numerous fixed air-defense assets and sapped morale, logistics and training standards. One must also consider that Moscow has actually upgraded and put back into service many of the older Syrian SAMs, and deployed two batteries of its most advanced SAM systems to its base in Latakia—the S-300V4 and the S-400—as well as additional Pantsir-S1s for close defense."

Hello. I've been following Syrian war for several years on daily basis, and can say that current presets are very outdated. Many fixed SAM sites are no longer operational because of the war. Also existing presets miss most of the mobile SAMs which Syria possesses.

I spent dozens of hours to recreate as accurate as possible 2019 Syrian AD preset for my scenario. It's based on geolocations, available OSINT, and locations of SAM sites which usually surface during Israeli airstrikes. Of course, it still probably misses many mobile SAMs, (espeacially on the coast), and early warning radars locations. It also contains Russian assests in Khmeim AB, and S-300s at Maysaf. As for the latter, they are supposed to be given by Russia to Syria, but in reality they seem to be under Russia's control and may be not totaly accurate to count them as Syrian AD.
