How to start an American base?

I landed 2 engineer units on the Canal in hope I cpuld build an US base near front lines.
I offloaded the troops they set up ship and its a very small dot. But the dot says its an OZ base?
If its an OZ base I cant land planes and that was my point.
What do I do?

you need to land engineer sqds and good levels of supply, then start building an airbase, as soon as the airbase is level 1 you will see a flag (no longer a dot) and you will be able to base unrestricted air squadrons there

LCUs need to be in combat mode to build

And you can pay PP to change the command of the base to the same command as any of the ground units there. hint: change it before you build it up, it's cheaper!
