Custom Names for Units

I read in the manual and have seen on videos where newly produced units can be given a custom name. This occurs on the production screen when the unit is first created. Is this the only time or way a unit can be renamed / re-numbered?

And how many spaces are available for the custom name?

A custom name can be given at production or later. If the unit is removed from the map the name goes back on the list.

I think the field is 25 characters.
