Fast v Slow Capital Ships

Post by Michael T »

I hope when the Pacific gets done that there is some thought in to how fast modern ships could easily escape the slow older ships. Much of the early naval war strategy was influenced by this.

For example at start of war the RN only had hood/renown/repulse that could catch and force an engagement with the German BC's.

FWIW GMT's boardgame has some very nice rules around this subject. Lots of modifiers for Fast V Slow ships in search, combat and withdrawal.

I consider everything. If you can PM me a link to those rules I would very much like to see them.

When you get the time you would be well served to check out these rules. The timeline is AH Third Reich, then AH Advanced Third Reich-Rising Sun, then GMT A World at War.

Some really nice stuff in here that might be food for thought.

The link takes you to the page, but to see the actual rules click on the PDF link, top of screen.

About ships I'd do a major rework, have them unable to be upgraded (Fundamentally a ship, once laid out, it is mostly that. It can be 'improved' to some degrees and that suits well with the '39 BBs that are remodernized WW1 super dreadnaughts.

Then add substantial difference to the techs for warships. Put some modern ships as '40 ships (Bismark, Littorio, Prince of Wales class ones) to underline the difference.

Remember that a naval group is 2 capital ships and support ships. So a drastic change would be too much.
