Torpedo Sorties

Post by ITAKLinus »

I have a question I cannot really solve. I tried to search for clear info in the forum but I haven't found a clear answer (probably I just searched poorly).

When I load a TB group on a CV is it loaded with torpedoes attached? So, during the first strike it makes, it uses torpedoes but doesn't take them from the pool available on the CV.

To be more specific, supposing I have a CV with 72/72 Kates. The CV has 45 torpedoes. Those 72 Kates loaded, will all use torpedoes for the first strike they make?
My understanding is that they use torpedoes since they rebased on the CV with them "attached" down and after using them, they go in the pool. Since there aren't enough for the second strike onwards many TBs will use bombs and that's granted.

What I'd like to know is whether for that first strike they'll have those "attached" torpedoes without asking anything to the pool on the CV or if they will ask to CV pool, finding less than needed torpedoes and then using bombs.

Hope I have expressed what I'm trying to explain.

No to your questions.

Bombers do not carry their ordnance with them when they move.  Their ordnance is derived from their location.

Transfer 72 Kates to a CV with only 45 torpedo sorties and only 45 Kates, if ordered to drop torpedoes, will fly with torpedoes on their first flight from that carrier.

Thank you very much Alfred, punctual as usual.

I guess I'll have to rework my configurations then.

I really hoped it worked like for LBAs.

The carrier has limited somewhat safe magazine space for torpedoes so the 72 Kates should draw torpedoes from the carrier. Having torpedoes "stacked" around the hangar deck or slung under the bombers while they awaited something to attack didn't work out so well at Midway.

Sandbox Test

Move those same 72 Kates to a base without any air HQ (and attached torpedoes) but sufficient air support to support them and see if they will attack with torpedoes. Make sure that a suitable target is only one hex away from the bombers.

TBs are not designed to land with torpedoes attached. Especially to land on a carrier. If they are loaded in port they are loaded into a hangar with no load. CV torps are handled separately through ship magazines, with the corresponding space restrictions

It goes beyond TBs. I think most planes ditched their loads before landing to avoid 'accidental separations'. IIRC there's a pretty famous picture of what happened to an ETO P-47 that tried to land with its load....

Thank you all very much for the replies!

Finally, I reworked my groups so that I remain within torpedo sorties of each carrier.

Thanks again guys
