Soviet Defense 41?

Post by jzardos »

Is it better for the Soviets to start the defense line further back before Barbarossa? I know this is always the question in WWII east front games. I like it in ATR/AWAW and other game that force the Soviets to have a certain % of units up on the borders. This is more historical, but some don't like this. Maybe this game should do that?

Curious to what people this here?

I think having the Soviet units on the border is more historically correct. However I like to have choices within reason. As it is now a player has a choice between the historical deployments or something different. So in one game I can try the historical deployments and in a different game I can try a different strategy and see how it works out. More choices = more replay-ability (within reason).

Player choice here.

It is my own view that the Soviets should mostly deploy forward because it is in their interests to do so. Others will disagree and plan their defense further back based on terrain.

There is also some disagreement about how to build the Red Army out for Barbarossa. I'm in the camp that says you should flood the zone with rifle corps ants and seek to delay the German until the reserve infantry armies arrive in 41. These are completely expendable units.

Others think the Soviets should build up a powerful mech force.
