[FIXED] Default WRA and Realistic Sub Comms

Post by tiemanjw »

I had an issue playing this afternoon...
I changed a scenario to realistic sub comms, and very quickly had a nearby H60 go and sink one of my subs...
Turns out the default WRA for ASW patrols is to shoot on sight (weapons free) as opposed to inheriting the side WRA (weapons tight). It appears that different missions have defaults that do not align with the sides defaults (ie, AAW patrols always default to radar on, ASW patrols default to weapons free vs submerged contacts)
Is there a way to force newly generated missions to inherit the side settings unless otherwise set?
Or, better yet, be able to set the defaults for the different mission types?

An excellent observation, thanks!

How about this wrinkle: When creating a new ASW mission, IF the scenario has the "realistic sub comms" feature enabled, AND the side has submarines, then set the ASW WCS for the mission to "tight" (ie. "be careful"). Otherwise, retain the "weapons free" behavior.

That would work... I'd say, so long as I don't have to remember to change it each time I set up a patrol, it works for me.

One other thing to consider is scenario editing... if/ when the scenario author sets the "realistic sub comms" check box, would it retroactively "fix" this (especially on older scenarios where patrols (especially AI player) may already be set up. Just something to consider.

This will be changed in the next update. If 'Realistic Sub Communications' is on, any new missions which target subs (patrol, strike) will default to 'Tight' WRA Doctrine instead of 'free' UNLESS the player has set the side-level Doctrine to 'free' manually (i.e. the player has given everyone free release on subsurface targets.)

A message explaining the WRA changes will appear when you turn realistic sub comms on/off in the editor.
