Another source for digital elevation data for mapmaking

Post by Fishbreath »

I came across this dataset, produced by Jonathan de Ferranti, which has some advantages over raw SRTM data. For many parts of the world, he used local survey data or digitized topographic maps, which helps eliminate e.g. treetop noise found in raw SRTM data. For instance, in the US, he uses the 1-arcsecond-resolution National Elevation Data model, downsampled to 3 arcsecond resolution.

At any rate, the only issue with using the data in Armored Brigade is that areas with relief frequently look terraced when using it in its raw form. I found that a mild Gaussian blur (applied to the data in QGIS, using the SAGA Gaussian filter processing option with circle search and radius 3) makes it much more usable without costing too much in terms of height accuracy.
