How do you conduct CSAR in CMO?

I was playing North Pacific Shootout today when one of my F-14As was shotdown. The pilot bailed out and ended up in a life raft and I could figure out how to rescue him or there was any benefit in rescuing him. Any insight is appreciated!

Select the downed pilot and a nearby unit, open the special actions menu and click 'Perform Search and Rescue'
