de-ensembling campaigns

Post by Gallo Rojo »

Hi!
Is there a way of de-ensembling a campaign?
I mean, tanking a campaign an broke it into separated scenarios in order to play them individually.

thank

I don't know if an alternate/easier way exists, but this should work:

extract(copy/paste) the files of the battle you're interested to play, out of the campaign folder and place them on your desktop.
Then rename them as scenxxx.*, then place them in the scenario folder.

You're done :)

Resisti's advice is good, as far as it goes. It will get the campaign battle out of the campaign folder into a scenario configuration.

The problem is, you may or may not have a core foce with which to fight. Unless the player has saved and converted specific battles FROM the campaign, the "sliced up" campaign battle cannot have anything in the way of support forces. In addition, the deployment will probably come out to be the player's forces lined up along the edge of the side of the map to which they belong.

Changing any of this requires opening the newly created Scen. files in the Editor. I've done this a lot and it works fine. Since you can place forces anywhere when using the Editor, you have to decide if the start lines are going to be observed ... and so on. Generally, it works out fine if common sense is used. Bill's U2R in particular has produced a couple fine stand alone scenarios for me.

Good luck.

This could get a little trick, as one side starts incomplete. You first need to copy the scenario over to you /SCEN directory. Don't forget to rename the c???s???.files to scen???.files. Now you need open the scenario in the editor, buy forces for the campaigning side, and then deploy them.

A better solution might be to make a one scenario campaign. Copy the scenario into your /SCEN directory as you otherwise would. Use the campaign editor to view the build points available up to the scenario you wish to play. If it is the first scenario, just use the build points. If the scenario is a later one, you would need to estimate how many build points would be available for upgrades. Once you have that number add the number, or make note of, the support points. Now exit that campaign and make a new one. Fill in the build points, and select the scenario you copied earlier into the /SCEN directory.

Either way the results should be interesting. Have fun!

I generally get better results from saved campaign battle files - my routine is to save at the beginning of every battle, that save stays in the "permanent" save file, the per-turn saves I delete after finishing the battle. Once the campaign is finished in toto, I zip all the "beginning" turn files and move them to a CD.

When I want to go back and do a stand alone battle from the campaign, all I have to do is rename whichever one it is to Scen - I do all three files - move it into Scen folder and open in Editor. Extracting a battle starting from the Campaign Edit screen is tricky, its just a lot easier to do the above. Frankly, I wouldn't know WHICH battle I wanted to replay or edit unless I had played it at least once.

The turn files per above compress nicely, I also have lots of them on 250 Meg Iomega Zip disks.

Hope this helps, once you do a couple extracted-edited battle scenarios its a lot easier than it sounds. You can also do neat things like make the infantry squads riding T-34's into 12 man units - once they dismount, only 8 can get back on. I suppose if a person wanted, they could make the mounted squad 250 or more men, though it seems it would be a VERY crowded tank.

I kind of avoided editing for the first year of SPWAW play, once into it there was so much fun involved that now I automatically open a new scenario in Editor, just to see what it is like. I most usually wind up changing something, if only the FO Arty rating.
