Striking Targets of Opportunity

Post by Randomizer »

Here's a good article at War on the Rocks detailing the first air strike of the 2nd Gulf War. It demonstrates the complexity and planning that are an integral part of contemporary air-ground operations, even those thrown together with the assets already in the air.

Back at you and the family. Understand that you're getting a real winter out your way but here it's grey and damp with the daytime frost line at about 2500' ASL. We spent Christmas Eve watching our Terrible-Twos Grandson live in Korea opening his presents via some Facebook app that SWMBO uses regularly. Of course it was Christmas morning there and after that, everything locally was anti-climatic and unimportant.

I liked how he described timed shots with HARM, firing them blind in advance of strikers so that if someone DID turn their radar on, they'd get hit.

so that if someone DID turn their radar on

Agree, shows the difference between SEAD and DEAD. The strikers weren't planning on killing the radars with HARMs just keep them silent so they could be killed with GBUs
