Beginner - what game

Post by IanJB »

Help [&:]
I want to play a beginners game that is Hex Based and Turn Based that can be played over and email. Tried Commander Europe At War but it gets far to complicated for a beginner.

For tactical scale (infantry squads, individual vehicles):
Battle Academy
Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon
Battle for Wesnoth (FREE GAME!)

For operational scale:
Panzer Corps & sequels (Allied Corps and whatever else)
Order of Battle (game is free, scenarios/campaigns are DLC that cost $$)
Unity of Command (sequel coming soon)

[edit]
Panzer Corps has many different kinds of units and challenge is to have right ones for given scenario and use them correctly (rock/paper/scissors). Order of Battle looks remarkably similar. Unity of Command has less variety of units and challenge is to maneuver them correctly while maintaining supply lines while trying to cut enemy units off from their supply lines.

If you have experience from popular Warhammer 40,000 miniature game, you could be interested about Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon. It's based on Panzer Corps game engine, but is scaled more to the tactical scale.

And welcome to computer wargaming [:)]
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Unity of Command (sequel coming soon)

Unity of Command 2 is out since last September.

To answer the initial question, I would add TOAW IV to the list of operational games. Small scenario can be a good starting point like Kasserine.

John Tiller Campaign Series. A vast variety of scenarios (of various sizes) covering the WWII period on all fronts from 1936 to 1945 - plus tons of additional ones created by the community. Easy to learn, and a great experience in MP too.

Team Junkfish have announced a Late Summer 2017 release for 'Attack of the Earthlings' - a game that isn't a survival horror title yet still manages to sound like one.

Players play as aliens of a insectoid alien race who's home has been threatened by humans looking to profit on their outer-world expedition. Planet X13 has much fossil fuel reserves. Humans still haven't figured out how to rely on renewable energy sources.

It is a turn-based strategy game.

ATG and John Tiler games are way too complicated for him. He is having trouble with CEAW.

WarPlan is very simple to learn but long on mastering it.

Here are some suggestions of the Matrix games I own that are easy from top to bottom in complexity and learning:

Warplan
Panzer Corps
Kursk – Battle At Prochorovka
Strategic Command Wwii: War In Europe

Please note that games like Advanced Tactics Gold, any of the John Tiller games, The Operational Art of War and Steel Panthers series are medium complexity games and games such as GG War in the East, War the West and War in the Pacific are complex games.

The original poster mentioned that Commander Europe at War was too complicated for him, so my suggestion would be to try either Warplan or Panzer Corps, if those are too complex for him then there is really no other easy game that I can think of that is not too complex.

My recommendation would be Vic's ATG. He can check out its predecessor, People's Tactics, which is still offered as freeware and runs under Windows 7 and 10. Here's the link.

Battle Academy. The best mix of simple, but not mindless, fast, and playable vs two persons turn by turn over the net.

Small maps, low unit density and fast turns.

As easy as Chess, and as hard as Chess.
Wargame, 05% of the time.
Play with Barbies 05% of the time.
Play with Legos 10% of the time.
Build models 20% of the time
Shopping 60% of the time.
Exlains why I buy em more than I play em.
