Air strike bug still exists

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Air strike bug still exists

Post by exsonic01 »

Air strike is showing opponent unit's information near air strike target tile.
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.a ... bug
2.10 Fixed – Air Strike Combat Hints FoW
We made a few corrections to the various airstrike hints to have them show information relevant to the correct
owning player. If the airstrike is yours, you will be given detailed information as to what it is doing throughout
the attack. If you are the targeted player, you will only get information you would know (no more seeing the
state of the aircraft after the attack for instance).

It says this bug is fixed back in 2015, but this bug still exists. I was playing 3rd Herd with other player as Blufor. And his airstrike and artillery strikes were dropped on well hidden targets, where none of his recons neither Hinds were existing to watch my forces.

His first airstrike was understandable, because tank engagement exposed the whereabouts of my forces. But next turn airstrike and artillery strikes were performed on hidden Abrams and Bradleys. Abrams were hiding in the valley, and Bradley was hiding behind the ridge. I never saw "spotted" white dot on my units icon for those targeted Abrams and Bradley. Only possible explanation is, he saw my forces via airstrike.

In SS, please test and fix this bug.

The bug fix and what you are seeing are two different items. The bug fix was information being shown to the wrong person. Units being seen during a strike can happen and my guess is that is how your opponent set his arty and added air strike. That will not set a spotted dot.

As for SS we will be looking to remove the spotted dots on units not engaged by fire or lased by capable units and detectable by the lased unit. We will also be refining the spotting of additional units during strikes. LOS in general is getting a revamp. [8D]
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

I think airstrike should not spot more units or share information with player on the ground. In cold war, there was only radio communication and there was no FBCB things or battlefield data links.

It would be incredibly hard to detect and recognize ground units on the ground from fighter jet, and that is one of the reason why blue-on-blue airstrike incident occur even in Gulf war and war in Iraq / Afghanistan.

My opinion is, spotting of additional units by airstrike should be removed. That is not realistic neither possible. Maybe give unidentified ? icons with very low chance.

Sometimes TOC can show you estimated locations of enemy concentrations, that is why I spread out my units in fear of saturation or air strikes. I think this simulates electronic warfare and listening etc.

Even today's aircraft during CAS mission has no such data-link ability, fully-sharing all enemy ground unit's type, number, location, and heading to friendly ground units is pure fantasy even in current level of technology. Not to mention cold war where everything was "discussed" via radio communication.

Some early warning airplanes can try something similar, but not perfect. During Gulf War, E-8 Joint STARS showed an example of detecting moving Iraqi forces:
https://youtu.be/aHlx97_dj1I
But as you can see, those are radar signals, not something like we see from games. Even those radar signals from early warning planes cannot clarify types, headings, and other details of signals. Not to mention Gulf war environment would be very different from cold war Germany, where those early warning airplanes would be impossible to fly that close to front line.

So, current description of FPC-RS regarding airstrike - showing all opponent units nearby the target tile during air strike - is wrong, very wrong. This is just simply impossible. Air strike should not open any of opponent unit's information to player.

Plus, there should be more chance of blue-on-blue incident if it is not introduced, if this game really wants to depict "battlefield friction" more realistically. Not only blue-on-blue strike, but some algorithm to realistically depict all possible situations of friendly fire should be implemented.
