How does air unit range work in 1.12.03
From the manual v2_5_5
The maximum range at which the group's aircraft will operate. Available options are anywhere between one and unlimited (the maximum range of the aircraft in miles). As setting the groups range to zero is impossible, zero is used to set the range to unlimited, which is the default when the game starts. Group range will be ignored for the purposes of combat performance, landing safety, calculating the number of aircraft sent for a mission, transfer range, and replacements availability. AI will not use this setting. Note you
can set anything but ranges over the aircrafts maximum have no effect.
If I set range for an air unit manually to fx. 300, it says "Group range: 300(10), indicating that the range in hexes is 10? If I set it to 299, one less, instead. It says 299(9) so the range in hexes should have dropped one. I take this that the range factor is 30 and not 40 as some have mentioned, or 10, as I believe the manual states.
Then why cant I bomb units within range, with zero miles flown, air base in open or light forest, clear weather, etc? I could air drop supplies, but bombing on the same range seems broken.

The base flight is 10 miles per hex and this is correct for some things like air transfer missions. But other missions have a multiplier reflecting the fact that in some missions aircraft do not fly straight but zig zag. This is also described in the manual. At least when others have tested the multiplier out for most missions in comes in as 40 miles per hex whatever the number in brackets says afterwards.
For my part whenever I am flying a manual bombing mission I would always set the airgroups to 0 (unlimited) and fly it that way. Have you tried that?

Yes. Even units with unlimited since start of turn, plenty of fuel and ammo get the same result. No attack possible. :-/
What is strange is that I can see green hexes, that should be in range, that ends with red further away. Any settings I need to change? Air doctrines shouldnt have anything to do with Shift-clicking target, correct?

RE: How does air unit range work in 1.12.03
Has this problem earlier. Two possible solutions were % to fly (which still affect manual missions) and strange undocumented range limits. For air transfer, the range limit seems to be 3x plane range which was strange.
PS. Still working on turn 1. Makes me nervous that you have all these questions up in the meantime

RE: How does air unit range work in 1.12.03
do u click on the airbase u want to use and then shift click target?
RE: How does air unit range work in 1.12.03
Yes. I have tried clicking shift + right click, with or without marking the air base, as well as staging air bases. Some air units have 0% flown miles. Bug?
"Bomber aircraft unavailable or out of range" on every single air base is strange, yes?
I could do recon and air drops. But no bombing.

RE: How does air unit range work in 1.12.03
I was doing a T1 recently (build 11.03) and a group of my Stukas wouldn't fly when I tried to have them stage out of a forward base. But once I selected them specifically, I had them fly to another closer target. After that, they were available when staging. Some weird stuff going on under the covers.

1. Luftflottes should be independent and non-mixable in missions (perhaps even for staging flights maybe?)
2. There’s a limit on airbase to staging and staging to target that are both less than aircraft range going on direct air missions. See manual for exact numbers.

I´m not trying to do staging, that has worked so far. As well as recon and air transport of supply.
I am trying to bomb enemy units but it wont let me.
I am on daytime missions with daytime enable air groups. Is there any setting or button that can disable manual bombing?

Yes. What specifically would you be looking for? Screen shot of what?
When I try to make the attack the message box "Bomber aircraft unavailable or out of range" pops up wether I have marked a specific air base or not. Not much more to it.

Your air settings, the location of your base and the commanders report for that specific base.

Maybe I can send you the file and you can take a look? Its for every base, no matter range, miles flown and they are all in the right terrain. They are not set to night missions.

My Ground attack attack settings where set to 0, since I read that they wont affect manual attacks. Apparantly you have to have them above zero though.
Thanks a bunch to zhoel for figuring this out!!!

They definitely will attack in manual attacks if above zero. But you can toggle off ground support in the ground doctrine with the settings at the bottom.
