Special Forces can perform one of two missions per turn (readiness level permitting), Counter-air--which is essentially attacking off-map airfields:

...or Interdiction--attacking off-map supply convoys. Cycle through the mission types by left clicking on the box on the right...a C, I, or dash will appear.

Naah, still can't figure it out. I'm getting no UI feedback like using other ground assets where you get an asset icon over the counter. I thought I could apply the LRDF asset to an enemy group and i'd see a marker?

Special Forces are "off-map" assets; they are not placed on the map. You can assign them to one of two missions--counter-air or interdiction. For example, in the image below I have assigned the LRDG squadron to counter-air. This increases my counter-air value from 0 to 1.
