Bozo is back from retirement and has lots of questions

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Bozo is back from retirement and has lots of questions

Post by Bozo_the_Clown »

Picked up this game again after 3 years. Still so good!

I am wondering what's going on with version 1.12.03. I did the usual encirclements and in the north some units are still in supply even so I took all the Baltic ports (sorry no screenshot).

Out of supply enemy units no longer show up in red? Is that intentional?

German cavalry unit has movement points like a Panzer division (46 MP). That can't be right.

There is a small bug in 1.12.03 which doesn't show isolated unit in red. It will be fixed in the next patch. For now, just mouse over the enemy units. If it says SP -1, they are isolated.

The Cavalry Division MPs have been changed before this version.

Thanks for the quick response. One more question about fueling HQs with Ju-52. There now seems to always be a penalty no matter whether an airbase is adjacent or not.

16.3.5.1 Only 25-75% of supplies and 16-50% of fuel dropped reaches the target successfully. From Jan 1942 this Airdrop Penalty loss can be
negated significantly by airdropping cargo to hexes that contains or are adjacent to a friendly airbase unit provided that airbase is
located in a hex that was under friendly control at start of turn (reduced losses occur as they are assumed to land). Movement of a unit
plays no part in the eligibility of the unit to receive airdropped cargo.

You're probably too early in the game.

Sure thing. Are you in 1942? Is the airbase in a hex that started the turn in friendly control? Is the terrain not swamp, not heavy wooded and not urban?

Also notice that fuel requirements for the Panzers have almost doubled, from 300+ to 600+, which will make refuel by air less effective.

Allot of big changes.

Trucks are meaningless at least when it comes to Germany - check out SS turn 7 181K trucks and only (86K) required.
Its more about distance to Germany + distance to RH = MP's. Trucks are really not an issue anymore for Germany or Russia.

Also Ju-52 fuel drops were nerfed by 50% because of the changes to trucks.

I play both sides and think the truck changes will make steam rolling into Germany summer of 44 more like blitzing in 42, but that's just what
I think and have yet to find a german to make it past summer 42 under 1.11.03. Mybe I can find 1 under 1.12.03?

If you make a few changes you can still get 4 German MoT divisions (1 PC) over 35 MP's not 40 MP's. As long as you think ahead the change is not that big a deal.

Thanks for all the answers. Lots of new things to try out.

I have this following situation in Odessa that seems strange to me. Why do I get a hold with these odds?

1.12.00 rule 19:
Defending units will not retreat from battle that ended with odds 2.00 to 1 or better for the attacker if the fort in hex will be at level 4 or better. For heavy urban, mountain terrain or working port level 10+ add 2 to fort level, for light urban, rough terrain or working port level 5+ add 1 to fort level.

Hm, the garrison in Odessa held several times even at level 3. Hope that is intended.

It is intended. To get those fortress cities/ports down, you need a lot of pioneers and artillery. Once you get the fort level at 2, the city will fall.

Did you just take Liepaja? Did you take Ventspils to the north last turn? Both are ports that can give supply.

And another question. Why is the northern unit in command range. I count 7 hexes. Or is that because it's a pocket?
