Sub vs Sub combat?

New player question:

I have searched the manual and cannot seem to specifically find anything on "Sub vs Sub"?

Is it possible to attack a sub with another sub? Knowing where it is, I pull alongside but cannot seem to attack. Is there a trick to this or do subs not attack other subs?

Could have sworn one of my was attacked by the AI, hence the question.
