Nuclear War

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Nuclear War

Apocalypse Now?

Cold War Fact: Russia Planned to Attack NATO with Hundreds of Nuclear Weapons
This is a plan for the end of the world, dated 1970.

But would any of this actually have happened? Just because the Warsaw Pact planned for atomic war didn’t mean the war was any more likely than if it hadn’t planned at all, right? Surely this was a case of “thinking about the unthinkable.”

Some historians insist that the Soviet Union had a “fairy-tale” mindset when it came to a hypothetical war in Europe and the use of nuclear weapons. It’s also worth noting that the United States has done all the same insane planning. America’s Single Integrated Operational Plan had thousands of nukes annihilating the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and China.

But it’s possible to believe that the Soviet leadership did think realistically about atomic weapons and had no illusions about their dangers. Consider that the Soviets never exported nuclear weapons, except to China, and kept nukes out of the hands of Fidel Castro when they decided he was “unstable.”

It’s possible that in formulating these plans, the Soviets caught a brief glance at the realities of atomic combat—and that may have made them even more determined to avoid all-out war.

Interesting to note that we normally see the URSS as doing the first attack, but in fact, they were expecting that the first blow would come instead from NATO:

According to documents unearthed in the Czech Republic, Soviet generals “fully expected Western ‘imperialists’ to make the first nuclear strike.” The Soviets and their allies determined they should stage preemptive atomic attacks if war were imminent.

I read something somewhere about a Russian who turned up in America on a training/exchange juncket after the Cold War - after work beers and of course the conversation turned to what if? Yanks asked the Russian if he thought his side would have pushed the button if it came to the big one....

Paraphrasing for dramatic effect...the reply went as follows;

"Mate, we had 500 nukes just for Denmark..."

it's too bad that FCRS didn't include any scenario that allow both side use tactical nukes without any restriction.
One scenario in FCRS and one in FPG allows NATO player use nuke as last resort, you have to wait for a very long time to get the launch code.

I understand the current AI cannot handle WMD smartly. But if there is a PBEM scenario that simulate a battlefield with tactical nuke, that would be fun. Image a trigger happy WP regiment commanding officer, he has 4 tactical nukes at his dispose (based on WP's doctrine), and he don't need his boss' authorization...
Sir? Do you want to order a Kung Pao Chicken or a Kung Fu Chicken?

You can build a head to head scenario and add nukes to both sides. Maybe as reinforcements at some time to simulate a release order. The AI in Red Storm is not capable nor is there a scripting function to give the AI a release criteria.[8D]

Nukes come with a hefty VP penalty. But they look cool going off in the game. [X(]
