So far I've only used Elite but I'm thinking of trying out Heavy Artillery. There are a few other choices. I'd appreciate some thoughts about using some of the others.
Thanks.

Specialties improve certain combat parameters selectively.
Elite usually a general combat boost through the 10% Experience boost. I usually use it on all my armor.
The other probably most used is adding Tank Destroyers to my Armored Infantry and Infantry once I upgrade all the others.

The rest are so specialized I hate to waste the limited number of points you get on them. They are only useful a certain situation which may never happen because of other things going on. Maybe if they lower their cost I might use them but to lose the ability to upgrade a unit to Elite just to get say a unit a little better at Winter combat just doesn't look like a good trade off.

I'm thinking of trying out Heavy Artillery.

In my opinion making any attack without a heavy artillery unit involved is a waste of manpower. On average a single heavy artillery can usually shift the odds by at least one odds level and sometimes two. The loss of half the enemy entrenchment level is a decisive bonus and makes heavy artillery one of the best if not the best specialty in my book. Just don't over-do it as they don't stack so you only need one every 4-5 hexes along your line to make sure any attack can reduce forts one level.

Do you put your heavy artillery on anything besides infantry? I was thinking of mechanized.

I use it on everything. Mech is a defensive unit when compared to armor, so I tend to put it on armor before mech. I usually operate 4 armor units together in an attack group so I make sure they have an artillery, an engineer, an infiltrator (think that's what it is called) and an AT. I forgo experience because armor is so busy it can easily get its experience up on its own.

I don't use a lot of mech except with Russia. What I do use I try and give AT because nothing beats a mech with AT as a city defender.

Yes, this was interesting. I usually just use elite for the same reason as stated above, that the things usually don't turn up at the right places anyway. But there was some very good thoughts here, and I will definately start using the assets more calculated.
