Preview Northern Fury #41 Tour de Force

Post by Gunner98 »

This one is taking a while to build but here is a preview:

You are in command of Strike Fleet North (STRIKFLTNOR) and control all naval and air assets north of the GIUK gap and above the Arctic Circle in Norway. Your boss, Admiral Falkner commanding Strike Fleet Atlantic (STRIKFLTLANT) from shore at Faslane Scotland has given you his command ship (USS Mount Whitney) and most of the offensive power of NATOs Atlantic Fleet.

You’ve just wrapped up Operation Thor’s Lightning with a two-carrier strike on the Command and Communications structure in the Narvik area, but we’re not ready for the next major operation yet. You’ve been informed that the amphibious/airborne operation planned for northern Norway is at least two weeks away. Therefore, you have the problem of keeping the pressure on the Soviets without risking any major losses. Of course, Ivan will see this as an opportunity to strike back, he still has lots of ways to do that.

You’re role in this scenario is one that is seldom depicted in CMO, that of a ‘holding action’. You are not on the defensive, but your offensive actions need to be limited and have the general effect of tying the enemy down for the next 10 days. Physically, you have the capacity to restore cave-dwelling as an acceptable way of life in north Norway – but that would be counterproductive and not fit the overall plan of action for the next month. Going on the attack now would expend tremendous resources, both logistically and in the form of loses, bringing the Strike Fleet to a much weaker state when it is needed to support the amphibious operations in a couple weeks. From a principles of war perspective; you are conducting an Economy of Effort operation to allow Admiral Falkner (and you in later scenarios) to Concentrate Force and Maintain the overall aim of the campaign.

Shouldn't be too much longer...

Seven total:

4x CVN
1x CVA (JFK back from the Carib & SLOC duty)
2x French Foch & Clemenceau
2x Brit (Ark Royal and Invincible)

About 120 ships & subs total
650 AC

The trick is that they are spread from Halifax to Portsmouth, Jan Mayen to the Azores

Yeah, my PC's going to need an upgrade before I try to play this one on stream. I can see smoke starting to come out of it just at the thought of playing this.

Now the real question, what are the soviets going to throw at you? 7 CVBG's I can't imagine your just going to have a single SNA regiment at you.

It's Ark Royal not Arc Royal writes the pedantic Grammar Nazi... But to be fair not everybody gets Ittoqqrtoormiit on the first try so well done there. This looks like a really BIG scenario and probably even more complex! Wrapping the old brain box around the NATO mission here is probably going to take quite some effort but looking forward to the finished version anyway.

Cheers

This looks really interesting. Is it really going to be a 10 day scenario? (He said hopefully.) That would put it second only to NF 12.6.

If it's that long I've really got to start paying attention to fuel, to keep my escorts on station. I'd wager aircraft readiness/maintenance levels will be horrible. I'll bet my dwindling Phoenix stocks and the like are going to be a problem too.

Definitely looking forward to this!

Interesting, sounds like a long and strong scenario that's down to get the friction on.

Thanks C, got it. Problem when you have an old brain and lumping the Ark Royal with the Jeanne d'Arc in the same scenario...

Andrew, I have no idea what you're talking about [;)]

These are you two most northerly CVBGs and the Replen ships are not allowed this far north

So, not that I advocate trying to skirt around orders, but what happens if I did bring the replenishment ships that far north?

You lose about 250 VPs each time it happens (going north or south so 500 VP total). There are a lot of VP in the game so that is not an outlandish number and it may be an option.

Just another snippet to keep you busy over this scenario:

You receive a briefing from your J-3 (operations) and J-4 (Logistics) officers:

Situation: Commander Strike Fleet Atlantic (COM STRFLTLANT) has tasked us with coordinating the establishment of two ASW helicopter patrol bases to relieve some pressure on our ASW task groups. Once established the two bases will handle the baseline ASW patrols between the Greenland Icepack and 2*W Longitude (about 130nm east of Jan Mayen Island). SACEUR (NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe) has authorized this mission and it is to be an international affair, British, French, Canadian, Dutch, Danish and US forces initially; with the possibility of others joining later. There will be a squadron of Canadian CP-140s available later in the week to reinforce this barrier.

Mission: Establish two ASW Patrol bases located at Ittoqqortoormiit Greenland (Wolf Dance) and Jan Mayen Island (Baby Ice) and establish an ASW barrier NLT 0600hrs 23 Mar 94.

Execution: Allocated to this task are two main groups but other ships and aircraft will be deployed to support this activity. This is a three-phase operation:...

Insert a bunch of detail here [;)]

Phase 2 Operations: In total this force comprises 21 ASW, 2 surveillance, 2 SAR, 2 Cargo and 3 utility helicopters. Combined with the 4 CP-140s working out of Keflavik, you should set up ASW and area surveillance patrols between 2*W and the icepack and 70*N to 72*N in an effort to free up other assets. Care should be taken to ensure these bases are adequately protected from the air, they cannot remain secret for long.

Phase 3 Sustainment: ...

And some more stuff here [;)]

I wonder how difficult this would get if CMO accounted for aviation fuel and sonobuoys, instead of letting us have an unlimited supply.

It would be very interesting. But I'm not sure if you ever played 'War in the Pacific Admirals Edition' - some players were turned off by the changes from the original game and started calling it 'Logistics in the Pacific'. One of those fine line things between a game and a sim I guess.

I do try and force the players hand a little by making him leave ships for days (literally) to unload and then to send resupply ships here and there. But I'm not sure how far to push it.

This one is now out for testing: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4816834

It's still a bit rough but I expect it will be finished up in 2-3 weeks.

Working on a Baltic Fury scenario now - You'll see how the WP is doing as you will be playing from their side, but on day 2 of the war.

Thor's Lightning is certainly the immediate forerunner to Tour de Force with a lot of connections.
