New Win 10 computer - no "clock speed button"

Post by Artaud »

I recently bought a new computer, and installed Eagle Day/BTR. I have not played in years, and I'm happy to see that the game runs on this computer.

The manual refers to a "clock speed" button, but there isn't one on my game screen. Has anyone else seen this? I am running version 1.05 of the game. I seem to remember from years ago that there was such a button. I would like to get my turns to go faster, and that should be possible. My new computer is much more powerful than the one I had when I first played this game.

I think that the clock speed button was removed in the latest patch. This because a bug occurred when the time setting was changed. I think there was a post about it recently.

I see. Thank you very much. Is there not a way now to increase the speed of a turn? It looks like the only way is to reduce message level to zero.

Like Orm stated, it was removed due affecting combat results in a patch. Im not aware of any other way other than M/L 0.
I hope you dont play the defender/ LW with this settings...

We are bringing back the 2x clock speed with 1.06. It's still not recommended during combat but it should speed things along on the inbound/outbound phase of the day.

Thank you so much! I look forward to 1.06. I'm very happy that this game is still alive, but I must say that I'm disappointed that it moves as slowly on this brand new Win 10 computer as it did on my old Win 7 machine. With my old computer I used to think "this computer can just barely handle EDBTR." But it feels like that now.

ditto, Artaud.

Have you tried dxwnd for full screen, or running the base game in windowed mode? That will speed up things significantly.

If scrolling is still "clunky" at max scroll speed you are suffering needlessly...[;)]

I have not worked up the courage yet to try to install Dxwnd. [:)]

I have tried running the base game in windowed mode. It does seem to be faster that way, but it's not possible to stretch the size of the "window" beyond the small default size. Windowed seems to take up about one-third of the screen, and everything is just a little too tiny for my 63 year old eyes. I'm playing on a desktop computer; my monitor has a viewing size of about 11 x 20 inches, which is fine for work and most of the few computer games I play. But EDBTR in windowed mode is playable for only a short while before eye strain takes hold.

As I did when I bought the game years ago, I turn off music, clouds, and the aircraft icons. But things are still slow, even when I set messages at "0".

if you increase the desktop resolution to say 1024x768 or thereabouts the windowed game will fill the screen. Not a bad workaround.

My current resolution is 1920 x 1080. So would I be reducing the resolution? Sorry for the dumb question; I'm not very tech savvy.

Yes, you are in a fairly high resolution there (relative to late 1990's technology) 1152x864 or close to that should work for EDBTR.

1. on your desktop screen, right click somewhere that is open screen, where there is no desktop icon. A list will appear.
2. Near the bottom of the list, click "display properties"
3. You should see "Display resolution" with a pull down menu of all of your available resolutions. Pick one of the lower resolutions and see how it looks.

Or download and install dxwnd [;)]

I changed my resolution to 1152 x 864 and tried the first couple of turns of the Nachtjagd I scenario in windowed mode. The game is noticeably faster, even with messages set to level 3.

Does DXwnd improve performance beyond a change in screen resolution?

The good thing is that when I changed my resolution back to the "recommended" level in preparation for work tomorrow, everything on the screen looked fine.

Maybe I will try DXwnd this weekend.
