Moonlight - very dumb question

Post by ITAKLinus »

Hi everyone!

I have a very dumb question: how do you forecast future moonlight levels in the game?

After billions of turns done, I have never bothered to deal with it other than looking whether tomorrow I'm gonna be victim of another "Allied bombing night party" or not.

No play forecasting is required.  The forthcoming moonlight percentage is displayed on the top bar between the date and hex coordinates.

Thanks for the answer! I'm not that ignorant [:D][:D][:D]

My question is even more basic: if the game tells me, so to say, "81% moonlight", how the hell can I forecast how much, in percentage, will it at a precise future date?

Don't tell me I have to start digging into the the moon tables and try to remember how the whole thing works...

It moves in one direction only at a time with a constant increment or decrement.

Why not?
At the minimum try to observe the dynamics for some turns

To add, it goes from New Moon (0% Illunm) to Full Moon (100% Illum) and follows the lunar phasess proportionally each cycle.

New Moon 0%
Waxing Crescent 25%
First Quarter 50%
Waxing Gibbous 75%
Full Moon 100%
Waning Gibbous 75%
Third Quarter 50%
Waning Crescent 25%
... back to New Moon

Simply ask yourself, is tomorrow a day closer to a New Moon or a Full Moon? It will be about 7.4% difference each day.

Obviously just the rough potential illumination all other things being equal.

The designers used the actual moon phases from the real war, so they will always be on a 28 day cycle.

Sorry, was off the top of my head. Was that not what I wrote?

You mentioned the cycle but not the 28 days. My comment was really about the remarkable effort to use the actual moon phases each day from the RL war.

Does bad weather (Overcast, Rain, Storms) reduce nominal moonlight to some "real" moonlight value?

Whether day or night, weather has it's own effect on visibility and detection.

It's a fair question, but likely unknown to all but the developers.

As I wrote, 7.4% difference per day all other things being equal. Clouds, position, jungle canopy cover, moonrise, moonset, bmnt, eent, etc. all play a part.

If the game developers found logs of the observed (after the fact) illumination in different parts of the theater then you would need to search those logs. Not sure if the insight would ultimately be worth the effort.

The technical answer is no.

However don't assume the technical answer means that bad weather is not an input into the algorithms when night operations are conducted.

You can have 100% moonlight but visibility down to 2000 yards due to weather. Very nice for PT Boats, MTBs, and small sized destroyer raids.
