Need for repairs

Post by LGKMAS »

Curious about how people regard the need for repairs. So far I have been paranoid about repairing ships. A System score of 10 makes me want to head for repairs. Flotation score of 5 worries me. Any engine score makes me break out in a cold sweat. No, not really but I am worried that I am too paranoid.

And now I am getting into the 6 month mark, a number of ships are starting to get damaged, whether by simply operating in the North Pacific or just being around. Others are getting minor battle damage. others need upgrades etc. My shipyards are starting to get full of repairs.

So, questions Does damage get worse if you don't repair anything? Say a System score of 10 could grow to 15 or 20 if not looked at.

Levels of damage? Floatation of 10, is this something to be worried about or should I let it go until it gets to 20?

Is it worth putting a ship into pierside repair that takes it out of action for 1 day and then 2-3 days to re-store ship? I am looking at my subs that won't be operating close to friendly bases. Normal cargo shipping etc will pass close by enough bases that they could easily pull in for a spot of repair. Subs, not so easy.
Should I send out a sub with system score of 5, flotation of 2 and eng of 3? Or is it better to patch it up first?

Obviously System of 30, Flotation of 20 and Eng of 10 is a definite repair.

damage will keep growing, unless repair happens, but notice ships also repair themselves, they won't repair major damage but some points of system can be fixed by the crew

and a little damage won't matter, but there is a point when you will start losing speed; so an entire convoy might end losing a hex per phase because one of the ships is damaged

I prefer to keep ships in the best shape they can be, but if for tactical reasons I need to use a damaged ship, so be it

and moving to pierside repair won't require 2-3 days to reactivate, as long as you repair it completely

I tend to fix any and all damage whenever I safely can (i.e. the port is secure). The reason is not how they will perform with minor damage now, but whether they will survive a bomb hit or torpedo/mine hit might depend on whether that few points of system damage has been cleared. Float damage always has to be cleared.
Bear in mind I always play the Allies who have lots of ports and ships, so keeping a ship in port for three days is no big deal.
Like Jorge, I will keep a warship on duty if there is an operational reason for doing so, like a bomb damaged DD helping to screen a carrier for another turn or two.
