I bet 100$ that the shown Pz.V knocked out a dozen of Shermans before its own crew destroyed it so that it won't fall in the enemy's hands. (after it broke down) :p

after slaying many foes...than to get scared after seeing a Kat coming down the street, panic and then drive into a building... and have to run away on foot!

Did any of you see the WW2 film clip when an M-26 engaged a Panther in some narrow streets of some German town?

Really something. You see the Pershing fire, see the Panther hit and watch the crew bailing out in a hurry as it catches fire.

Its probably the only clip I've ever seen that captures the entire happening. Quite impressive!

It was on the history channel last month...a Panther was rampaging about the shattered streets of Cologne. It knocked out a Sherman that went after it...then took off towards the famous Cathedral.
A Pershing was called in and began stalking the Panther...and found it sitting broadside at the end of a street. Three shots from the 90mm gun finished off the Panther and most of its crew.
It was pretty impressive footage, I must admit.

Here are some stills...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

from that famous film clip....

The Pershing (Sgt Robert Early is on the left and
John Deriggi is on the right) arrives after a Sherman is knocked out...
Image

it swings around the corner and spots the Panther sitting at the end of the street...it's gun aimed right at the M26. It fires on the run in order to avoid taking the first round...
Image

this first round hits home...and, as the crew abandons the striken panzer, the Pershing fires two more to make sure the job is done...(the streak of the second round slamming into the panther is visible in this shot...
Image

the Panther bursts into an inferno after the third and final round and would burn all night according to the soldiers that were there...

That looks like a facinating film sequence. does anyone remember the program that it was in? ... I've got the history channel, but I think it's a Canadian version, and I don't remember ever seeing that clip before ...

Correct me if I'm wrong Wild Bill...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

but wasn't it a program about American armor in WW2?

I remember that there was a lot of interviews with M4 drivers (sorry Jess, not making this up) and repair crews who talked about how the guys in the field wanted a better tank once they found out they were riding around in outclassed AFV's.

I want to say it was a program based on the book "death traps" but I can't remember for sure. Sorry I can't be more precise...perhaps someone else will remember the name of the program.

Perhaps the Katz Krew should have a slogan (reffering to the Sherman Sissies), "Friends don't let friends drive junk." :)

I've seen it in more than one episode or series on the History Channel. It is about the only clip that shows the methodical destruction of one tank by another.

But for the life of me, I can't remember which ones they were! Sorry, Willie!

I'm sure Orzel can help you here...

Very moving scene...

No, what happened was they were on a strudel break and the meal caught fire.

I have seen one of those US TD's, perhaps an M36, firing and watching the shell go for approximately 100 yds. before it hit what look to be a stationary tank of some sort, all on-sreen. You sure don't see many WWII shots of battle, or mock-battle, where you actually see the shell in flight. I think if you found lots of clips of naval shelling from the target's view you'd see quite a bit of shell path before the hit. I wonder if the round being low-velocity has a lot to do with that? I doubt you'll ever see a Panther or Tiger shot with the shell seen.

Thanks Orzel! Yes, it was a program about the Sherman tank being just that, a death trap. I'm sure that you are right about that. I taped that program and have it here somewhere in my pile of tapes collected from the HIstory Channel. I must have about 50 of them.

I'd rather tape them as they appear than pay the now $24.95 to buy them. Call me "frugal." ;)
