Alliance with minor?

Post by Red_Dwarf »

Is a mutual alliance possible, and if so how? Right now I'm facing off with a minor. Don't want war, would prefer a partner.

Minor you have the direct annexion but you get a war with a major.(protect) you got vassal state that's all. both use card. Otherwise you only have war. And with major you can have diplomacy mostly because they border someone else else you can expect dog eat dog and still war.

How can I get a minor to accept protection? If they do accept, do their armies vanish or do I now control them?

Your relation and the skill of your cabinet member influence the roll. If you protect a minor, then when another major declares war on them, the minor (including all units, etc) immediately joins you and you are at war with the major.

There are ways for peace and a alliance: use "Stratagem -> Minors" cards,

i found:
* offer protection: Offer yourself as protector. You will defend them when attacked.
* offer client: Offer them to become a client state. They'll be docile and pay tax.
* propose peace: End the was and go to peace.

there are sure more cards to find. The third one makes also peace with regimes that have "unclear" relations.

If I add a Propaganda card to the minister (which one?) before offering protection, would that help?

Yes, I just did that.

When you start to offer protection, you see who will do the skill roll.
Then switch to the other stratagem, apply to that person.
Then execute the protection stratagem: you can see that he has a bonus to his role (about +50 in my case, but that was with a different support stratagem (diplomatic envoy or similar)

So, I have used the "offer client" strategem on 3 minors and turned all of them into vassals. Is there any additional steps I can take to fully integrate them into my territory?
I just searched in the manual and I guess not. It says they will join me when they are attacked by another major, but nothing you can influence.
The problem about having these vassals is that you apparently cannot move your units through their territory without declaring war on them, and declaring war on them would be a huge negative relation penalty. Is there some way to move your units through your vassal's territory that I don't know of?

I've got a Minor vassal, I'd probably avoid doing this. If they're friendly enough to vassalise, they're not gonna attack, and until Vic creates a mechanism by which you can lower relation safely enough to invade without a huge hit to happiness and loyalty, you're better off conquering them outright.

To add, you can also hit them with multiple diplomatic friend cards before the roll, then along with the pre-roll shadow diplomat, you have a very good chance.

Also, failed roles still increase your officials experience. Avoid critical failures, however, as they have very negative effects.
